Alright as some of you know my Bolt has been down almost two years since I did a tail swap over to the Lightning tail. I got it going a few months ago and took off to ride it to work, got about three miles from the house and it started misfiring/backfiring out the pipe and chugging, I pulled the clutch in and it stopped. Put it back in gear grabbed some throttle and it started again. Turned around and drove it home. it was a kinda warm morning and after I got home I noticed the fan never came on rode at least 7 miles and it got pretty warm! Been thinking it was the fuel pump since but with the fan not coming on I am wondering if it isnt another issue? Bike has stock ECM and a gutted XB pipe from the previous owner. Wanting to get it riding again anyone got any ideas or ways I can check it? Its an 06 XB12R(S tail) with less than 9k on the clock. Also speaking of clocks, everytime I start the bike prior to the swap, and after, the low fuel light and low fuel Odo would come on and go off ater a few miles and the clock would reset everytime, just prior to the swap the Low fuel would come on randomly while riding? Need some help guys/gals dont wanna part this thing out and scrap it!!! And no I dont wanna sell the Select Seat, Heli-bars, or Lightning tail section, or other parts right now!!

This probably isn't it, since it sounds like an electrical problem, but how long was that fuel sitting idle in there, did you out any stabil in? After sitting for 2 years it's probably a combination of things, I'd check the electrical system, stator output, vr and such.

No stabil was running it every week or two just to keep it going on the stands. Ok I suck with electrical but I think I know someone who doesnt! Thanks Nik

Check all the connections you had apart to do the swap. Clock could be a lose connection, my fuel light stays on for half mile or so sometimes when I start my 1125, even if its got a full tank.

I'd start with wires, grounds, fuses, etc. I thought I was having a similar issue with my xb when i had it, it would chug or cut out, then it'd come right back.. was a lose connection that was killing it, then the vibration would allow it to connect to start again.. the cycle goes on lol

Hope its something simple, a TPS reset probably wouldn't hurt either.

Beautiful bike btw!

Put fresh fuel in it. All the lighter elements of the old fuel will have evaporated long ago. Very cheap to try it too. I'm surprised it even started on the 2 year old gas.

Yeah I think I will try all of that!!! Never even thought bout the fuel sitting that long! I'd rather drain a few gallons then drain it and replace something not needed! I'm gonna drain it and see if that doesnt work I am gonna take it all apart and go through the wiring! Will have to look up TPS reset's I have seen allot of people talking bout that!

Thanks for the compliments by the way! I love the bike but after the tail messing me up I kinda gave up and concentrated on the Busa but damn I miss that lil bike! lol

Kuntree, from what you described about the fuel light, you might have the chafed wire issue in the fuel pump harness too. It is a sucker to troubleshoot also. The wires aren't protected before '08 and it rubs on a corner of the fuel pump bracket and can short out the circuit. If you have ECM Spy or Turnerpro, run the codes and see what you get. That should head you in the correct direction.

When you mentioned that you ran it about 3 miles up the road, how long did you let it idle before taking off? If it hit closed loop at the 3 mile mark, you could have an intake seal problem also. Just stuff to check.

Yeh, Kuntree, I'm thinking fuel pump wiring too, after you drain the fuel, pull it and check the wires.
