my 03 XB9S doesnt know when its in neutral!
the light wont come on but everything else works fine the bike is in neutral but since it has that kickstand down safe mode the bike shuts off when i let the clutch out when its on the stand so i have to sit on it with the kickstand up to warm it up.

has anyone had this problem ? i figure its a loose wire or the neutral sensor is broken but i dont know where thats located so i cant check it.

any help is much appreciated

hit first, then reach down with your hand and wiggle the shifter to get your bike into neutral. then see if your bike will start. then you'll know if its the light or switch. then adjust your clutch. if the bike is in neutral and still will not start bye pass the switch you'll see it under your clutch controls

if it were just the bulb then the bike would not shut off when i release the clutch and the kick stand is down

i know it is the actual neutral sensor because with the kickstand up and clutch lever out bike running it doesn't go anywhere and all gears work fine bike rides normal

because the bike has the safety feature that wont let you ride away with the kickstand down you cant have the clutch lever out and the kickstand down at the same time unless your in neutral. My bike quits when i release the clutch lever even when i'm in neutral and my neutral light wont come on no matter what i do.

bike doesn't know its in neutral when it is in fact, in neutral

conclusion is the neutral sensor and i dont want to by pass it i want to replace or better yet repair it so ill check it out under the clutch controls as squidbuellie has suggested

any one else have an idea ?

sense that's the case... here's the parts and assembly manual [up]

but good luck on finding the switch it was a one year only thing that most dealers just removed and bye pasted.

here's a quick picture

You could by-pass the switch just to make sure it is the switch. Plus this would get you by until the new one shows up...

so with the switch bypassed will the light be on all the time ? not at all ?

i dont care about the kickstand safety thing but i would like the green neutral light to come on when the bike is in neutral still

So I'm confused at this point so let's get this straight

You physically put the transmission into neutral and...
1) Light on? yes/no
2) Start with clutch left alone? yes/no
3) Start with clutch pull? yes/no
4) Bike dies when clutch released? yes/no

with the switches bye passed it will come on in neutral and go off in gear... the two switches were a attempt to copy japanese sports bikes safety features. they are both 2 prong switches(like a on/off switch)one's on the clutch housing the other is next to the pivot point of the kickstand.the neutral switch is on the pulley side of your motor(you do not need to mess with it just for reference)

You physically put the transmission into neutral and...
1) Light on? no hasn't come on since problem started
2) Start with clutch left alone? havent tried that but i assume it will not at this point
3) Start with clutch pull? yes
4) Bike dies when clutch released? yes but only when kick stand is down

bike has no idea when it is in neutral so it always thinks its in gear:
1- no light ever
2-dies when clutch is released when kick stand is down

Let us know how it goes today. I'm still thinking that your bulb is possibly burned out only because it never comes on. As to the bike cutting off when the clutch is release with the kickstand down - the switch on the clutch lever seems like the best place to start.

Im having the same exact problem!!!

Bike will not start in neutral w/ kickstand down and no clutch.
Bike will start with clutch pulled in with kickstand down but once clutch released (in neutral) bike kills.

Also have no neutral light being illuminated.

Let me know how you fixed this!!!

I had the same problem, just change out the neutral switch on the rh side of the cranks, cost about ten bucks....

I have changed the Netural switch on many bikes But the Buell I had to do a little grinding and so on to my socket and a wrench. To get behind the front belt pulley so as to not pull the front pulley. Works pretty good. The safety switch on the Clutch lever is easy enough just pop out the lever and 10 mins later you are ready to go.[up]
