@snak: We rented a Wrangler in Hawaii and loved it. It's so unrefined, but that's the point! VERY competent off road too, even in stock form. It's definitely on my list of vehicles I still need to own!

Day I brought mine home. The new JKs aren't like the Jeeps of the past, way more daily driver friendly, always wanted one and I absolutely love it!

Any of you guys ever tried the 4dr Unlimited of road? That's probably the model I would end up with (for practical reasons), but I'm guessing it's not got quite the same clearance as the 2dr models(?)...[confused]

The slightly longer wheelbase will climb hills better, do whoops better, and be overall smoother. But you're sacrificing a little break over angle, and turning radius. If your not hard-core off-loading you'll never notice. In fact I see waaaaay more 4dr JK's than 2dr…...

Any advice on how the 4dr Unlimited works as a family vehicle with kids (& child seats) in the back?

Personally I don't like the 4Dr unlimiteds. Just aren't real Wranglers to me. But they actually outsell the 2drs. My buddy that had a baby sold his 2Dr for one and its very.practical

I had a TJ unlimited (LJ) for a while there and it was one of the most fun vehicles I ever owned. I loved it for a lot of the same reasons I love my XB. It's just a motor and a frame. It's unrefined yet capable and always found a way to put a smile on my face. My son absolutely loved it but it just got horrendous gas mileage so after my wife went out of work I got rid of it. I keep saying I'll get another just like the look of the 2dr but know I need a 4dr with two kids.

Here's a pic I found of the one I had. I had tons of hopes and dreams for mods but that'll have to wait for the next one.

I was looking for an Unlimited, but the price difference was past what I was willing to pay. You don't lose clearance, just longer wheel base.

If you do look for a Jeep JK, go for the 2012- present with the 3.6L. When Jeep launched the new "JK," it was paired with a 3.8L V6, that barely made over 200HP (THESE are the JKs that receive awful reviews). This new 3.6L makes 285HP, huge difference. Plenty of power for a small vehicle. I love mine. The only way I would ever buy a Wrangler was if they became a little more convenient. And with power locks, windows, interior lights, etc..., I was finally okay with getting one.

I have a 36 mile commute one way to work, ZERO highway, and 97% of the drive is under 40MPH. Little towns with stop lights, so some stop and go traffic as well. I'm averaging 20 MPG, and I don't think that's bad at all for a mostly "city" drive.

I drove one of the new 3.6's not too long ago and really liked it. the 3.8 was kind of rough and underpowered. Yeah, that gas mileage is liveable. I was probably seeing around 11 at best with mine. It took a full quarter tank to go to work and back. I live around 10 miles from work. I knew gas mileage would be bad when I bought it, just didn't expect it to be THAT bad. I'm one of those people that want less amenities I'm the weirdo that wants basics like crank windows, manual locks and stickshifts because it's less crap to break and I can repair it easier so the Jeep is right up my alley. I also look at it like a Lego car. You can build it how you want it. Absolutely loved having it but just couldn't afford to commute with it. Now that I have my XB though, I probably could have kept it. I ride to work more than anything now.

Hey, nothing wrong with having basics, as long as YOU are happy, that's what matters!

I love Mazda Speed3s, but with an XB I didn't need a sporty car. :p [up]

Nice color on the Speed3. I really liked them in those years. Not a fan of the big smiley faced ones that came later.

I know its like it has a **** eating grin that says, I know I look like a family car but I'm fast!
JustinMT Yeah I love my xb12r but riding in the speed 3 in 10 degree weather is more fun than the firebolt, and the bolt wont carry my family of 4 with 2 car seats!:p

I've gone on a couple offroading trips at parks with jeep clubs. Each time there was someone who "knew" the trail... and would scout the 4dr to the 4dr line and the 2dr to the 2dr line. Both equally capable, but required a different line to get up things.

Hopefully this'll work. Playlist from before I had a program to edit videos.
All jeeps. First one is a CJ8 with the back cut off, LT1 V8... the rest are more conventional newer jeeps. My brother's 01 Wrangler w/ mild lift, 33s, and lots of armor never fails to please. VERY capable... but no vids cause I'm always in it.
