Ran across this article this morning, is it me or does this bare a striking resembalance to the XBS series. No specs on the engine/motor but appears to be electric of some sort? But a drive by video clearly sounds like a exhaust note so kinda curious what it is.

I would drive it. I like the look and am excited about electric bikes (although leaning more zeroish than cruiser).

Have a hard time believing the hard core HD fans are going to be too excited about an electric powered Hog. Definitely won't sound like one. Kind of seems counter to the HD culture. I remember the initial backlash from the V-Rod, although that seems to have dissipated somewhat. I know there are still some who see the V-Rod as not really fitting the HD stereotype. It will be interesting to see what the reaction is to this bike.

Somewhere on the ad it says "electric bike the only way harley would" im not sure what that means maybe stick on fake chrome pipes? And a speaker that sounds like engine noise or do you have to run around screaming engine noises?

HD's marketing is pushing new "hip" styles to the "younger" crowd. I think they are running into problems with meeting ever increasing emission standards with old tech air cooled engines. They keep tuning them leaner and leaner which increases heat big time. Then they added a cat in the head pipe which makes things hotter yet. A carb was ditched for mandatory fuel injection years ago.

You can see where they are aiming for a younger rider with the Sportster lineup ads for the 72, 48, and Iron. The Vrod paved the way with liquid cooling and now they are coming out with the liquid cooled 500 and 750. I currently have a street glide and previously had a fat boy. The purists (primarily old guys like me) will still like the air cooled bikes. The noise and ride are reminiscent of a muscle car from the sixties. The heat these things put off in stock form can get pretty unbearable, especially in stop and go summer rush hour traffic which can make them unappealing. Lots of people on the HD boards theorize that the current lineup won't meet future government EPA restrictions which is likely why HD came out with an Ultra Limited this year which hides radiators in the lower fairings.

I like the looks of that Livewire bike and can't wait to see one if it goes into production. I don't know if I would spend what they will want for an electric bike though, but at least they are exploring what will be the likely demands of the future. Personally, the sound and feel of the engine revving through the gears is a lot of the experience for me. I think I'd spend the money on a Ducati Diavel instead.

I agree there. I don't think their typical fan base is going to be excited about it either. I think corporate H-D feels they have their current market well covered. That's their problem though. Harley seems to be having trouble breaking into other markets simply because of the typical offerings they've been putting out so long. People don't associate the name with anything other than a big-twin cruiser.

Now, they're trying to break into new markets like inner city cummuters, entry level riders and world markets where smaller bikes are required. Hence the introduction of the street 500, 750 and the electric bike.

What doesn't make sense to me is, if they are trying to break into new markets, why did they dump Buell? If you look at his current EBR line up. There's an entire sport bike category they could have kept captured. Now with Hero, he is in a market they are actively seeking. Sadly enough, Harley can't do what Buell did and merge because of they're to big. The customer base on both sides would feel the brands had suffered.

I think the typical Harley fan base would be more accepting of the electric bike if it had Buell's name on it though. They seemed to feel Buell was the black sheep anyway and ignored it. The history of LiveWire is going to be interesting. I might own one at some point. But, I won't expect the Bro Wave from anyone on another Harley while I'm riding it.

Hmmmm. Interesting. I think it looks pretty good. I'm anxious to see how it performs. And I would be more than happy to oblige to screaming out engine noises. I do that anyways.

Definitely not something I expected to see from Harley. With all this new stuff it almost seems as if Harley Davidson is trying to get back into the business of selling motorcycles lol

If HD does it right, it will attract a lot of people. Sadly, I don't know if they have the vision or staying power as they dropped Buell. The V-Rod, Buell & the new electric bike will bring in people who are not necessarily interested in the tradition HD bike. I know I wasn't until I bought my Buell. Now I am willing to give Sportsters (particularly the XR1200) a second look. Same goes with this new electric bike. It will bring in people who aren't caught up in the tough buy HD brand. This new hipster generation isn't as caught up in being a tough guy as the previous generations.

Electric bikes and solar power are the wave of the future. I am glad to see HD jump in and have a go at it. I just hope they have the vision and staying power to stick with it. I also hope they can get into it before they get chased down by the Asian bike companies.

Dont you owe people on here money or clear timing covers still?

Yup, something like that. Just disappeared! I ended up pay up his debt to people here on the board for the sake of Buellxb. I sent them as far as Twoguns in Australia. Water under the bridge I guess.
