I've had my Ulysses a little over a month now and have been researching/reading up furiously on every aspect of the bike. I'm a DIY guy with almost everything I own. However, a motorcycle is completely new to me. A few of the major problems known with the bike I already addressed, like getting the comfort kit for the heat and new mirrors to help with the vibrations.

I'm due for a 10k service right now. I found a place/shop near by but would like to inquire if there's anyone who maintains their own Ulysses close enough (300 miles?) and would like to do the 10k servicing with me. I was quoted $400 from a shop, which I'm willing to pay to you as long as I work with you and learn. Hell you don't even need to lift a finger, just provide the tools and the verbal direction as we go. Ideally you have a garage or a work space and the tools needed, though I'm willing to buy any extra tools as required.

I would like to learn from someone with experience, you don't need to be a professional mechanic though. As mentioned I can pay cash, owe you favors or help you work on your own bike/etc if you need an extra pair of hands for a specific project. I'm a NYC local of 24 years and can give you local support if you, family or friends are visiting town. Anything, I just want to learn to maintain my own bike. I'm a very quick learner, was taking apart/rebuilding remote control cars at 10.

Cheers,
Lyu

You live in NYC and end your message with cheer's? What's up with that ? I'm just kidding you, cheers is o.k. I don't live in NYC anymore but do live pretty close, I'm in Jersey, less than an hour away from you. Now, although I do own a 08 uly for a few months, I haven't had to do anything to it yet. I do have the shop manual and your welcome to ride down whenever I'm around. I can borrow a friend's MC lift and we can have at it. I'm an old school biker and used to do all my own work though I haven't had to work on a bike in quite some time. I'll PM you my number if you want.

Later !

P.S. please, do not offer to pay me anything.

OMG I just wrote up a lengthy reply and accidentally navigated away, whole post gone.

You're right, it should be something like "peace out". Doesn't your profile state it's at 11k, so didn't you have to do a 10k servicing recently?

Thanks so much for the offer, I'd love to come sometime. Whether to do work or just compare bikes & go for a ride. How comfortable are you doing some of the more complicated service as needed per the manual?

The reason I'm so anal is because the previous owner seemed so clueless about the nature of the bike. I've owned it a month compared to his 8 years and I literally know 10 times more about it than he did. Poorly installed engine guard, one side came lose as I brought it home from the 7 hour trip, did not think to give me original front engine mount bolts. Didn't have documentation of any work performed on the bike. Loose/missing screws or used completely wrong replacement screws, I went through many of the visible screws and a good 30% were loose. Clueless that this bike REALLY needs Loctite. Extra parts at time of pickup, not knowing what they were or where they belonged. Overfilled transmission oil. A ****ty job modding the airbox, looks like he used a butter knife.

Bottom line the bike is amazing but my fears are from what this guy thought he was "fixing" & has actually done the opposite. Again, thanks for the reply and offer - pls pm me your #.

Peace 8)
