Quick question. Or two. There isn't any extra steps that need to be done when replacing your battery, is there?

Make sure you connect the cables to the correct terminals of the bike. This may sound like an obvious step, but you'd be surprised (or not) at the amount of people who get this step wrong. And if you do it wrong, things can get expensive quick.

Also make sure ALL ground points are clean or you could have problems. If you have a ground point that is compromised its going to hinder the ability of the battery to pass current to the bike. This can cause charging issues, starting issues and running issues as well as cause some electrical components to die prematurely.

And how many amps does a good starter pull?

I'm assuming your asking to figure out which CCA rating to buy for a battery. If so, for a Buell its 220CCA or above. Pretty much no one is going to have an ammeter than measures that high of current in a home garage. Dont cheap out and get a 200CCA battery, as these motorcycles need all the help the can get to get past the first compression stroke.

Ok, I have found the factory spec for the battery is 200 cca's in the service manual. But I have not found the spec for starter draw yet. No help?

200cca's is going to be the bare minimum. Go for a 220cca or greater.

I do not have an ammeter that will measure beyond 30A. Since the starter was used in various HD models also, I'm sure someone has measured it as some point for some reason.

220 CCA battery at a minimum. Li-Ions are rated much higher but they cheat the test a bit... The Battery Rule is: You get that you pay for.

I'll check what a healthy stock Buell starter draws with my induction ammeter when I get home, it's a good question and I'd like to know myself. But if you're asking which of the aftermarket ones to pick... pay for the BIG one and be SURE its the right one. The Sportster version will bolt-on but has the wrong nose cone and will let oil out of the primary at higher RPM's.

njloco , go to Old Bones Cycle Shop in Toms River, and tell the owners to take care you for me. It's my sister and bro-in laws place.

An XB9/XB12 starter motor in healthy condition, on average, draws between 85-110 amps dependent upon:
ambient air temp
engine temp
viscosity and condition of engine oil
condition of both combustion chambers
internal engine wear
several other variables

You're welcome.
