Hi all, I need a little help. I've owned my X1 for about 10 months now and have had no problems with it. The other day I was riding and I stopped at a stop sign turned and all of a sudden this horrible knocking sound started. I had not been having any problems at all, no knocks, no hard shifting, nothing. At first I thought it was coming from the primary but I changed out my primary fluid and it still has a bad knock. So I checked my oil and it ended up being about a quart low which came to a surprise since I had just recently checked my oil level and it was toward the high end of my dipstick. Today I added some more oil to get it into the middle of the dip stick, started the engine up with the seat off and about 30 seconds into the bike idling to try and see if the sound was still present, the oil cap shot out spraying oil all over me and my shop. The cap was fully down like it should be. My question is what do I do now? Did my oil pump go out? Do I have a kink maybe somewhere in an oil supply line? I don't know where to start and would appreciate any help.

All you did was over fill it......In the future you can check the oil ONLY after it has been warmed up. If you check it when it is cold or sitting for a period of time it will show low or not at all, and then what a lot of guys do is top it off like you did. Since it has to much oil at this time it has to go some where ie: All over your floor.

As far as the noise goes if you know nothing about the bike bring it to a shop, NOT a harley dealership they will rob you blind....

I was in Kansas this summer. I stop for gas and when i started my bike back up, had a knocking sound. I had to haul it back to Indiana. My mechanic tore it down. He said a piece of carbon had got stuck between the head and exhaust valve. Bent the valve and push rod. So we are rebuilding the entire top end. Good luck hope its not expensive like my repair.

Thank you for the quick replies I am going to haul it to my mechanic and see what he thinks about the knock. I hope I don't have to rebuild the top end, sorry to hear that toolmaker98. The knock sounds like it coming from the rear of the engine almost to where the battery is housed and low down, hence why I originally thought it may be my primary.

I talked to my mechanic the other day and after he took a listen to it run for a few seconds he told me to check the compensator nut. Apparently they are notorious for coming loose and tend to make a knocking noise. I cracked into my primary yesterday to try and check that and found what was causing the noise. My primary tensioner had broken and the bar that supports the tensioner snapped in half allowing my primary chain to slap against the case. It didn't do any damage thankfully. Got the part ordered and should be back to riding in a week.
