While on the freeway coming home from work,I felt a odd vibration through my left footpeg[confused]I thought I was picking up an odd feeling from the grooves in the pavement. All of the sudden,I get a harsh rear wheel slap, side to side.I pulled the clutch in,coasted to the schoulder, looked things over.I had lost a rear wheel bearing:(Has this ever happened to any of you?I am going to replace the stock ones, front and rear, with some quality tapered bearings. And I need to get a new pair of boxers[smirk]

Can you replace them with tapered bearings? Aren't the factory ones a sealed bearing?

Got to the shop, and Dave had just taken everything off.He said the rear wheel spacer was oblonged and that the wheel bearing inner race was seized onto the wheel spacer. When he cut out the race, bearing puller tool only works when you have a full bearing in tact, the inner hub was full of shavings. He had to heat up the inner race and spacer just to free them from oneanother and pull the axle out.Who knows how or what happened, maybe just a bad bearing.[smirk]

hold on...rhyno, you got an '03?

the bearings are not orange?
the older ones, think they were black, were recalled

so if the front isn't orange also, better change them.

LeFox,no they weren't orange, they were black.I replaced them with some good German bearings,SFK,they are supposta be the stuff.I'm German,so I would have to say that's true.:DWill be changing out the front as soon as they come in,thanks.

My bad LeFox,they are SKF's. [smirk]
was going to say that when i read your previous post, but you already corrected it yourself ;)

btw skf is a german/belgian cooperation ;)

so, if it was the balk...they should have been changed to the orange ones by your dealer.
they are known to get stuck.

Lefox,
These orange bearings, can I see them without removing the wheel? Mine is 2003 also and I bought it used. I would like to make sure mine are done before I have a problem.

yea, you can see it clearly...
just look at the circle between axle & wheel. ;)

don't know...but won't hurt trying.

maybe wait till BPG is back and ask his point of view. ;)

It appears to have a little orange tinit left on it so I am going to assume it has been replaced. I suppose if I washed it the orange might be more noticeable. Thanks.

I bought the bike used, have yet to register the vin in my name, and my nearest dealer is about an hour away. That's why I go to my buddies shop,www.motogenex.com I trust them and that's more than I can say for some dealerships I have delt with. Not a recall you want to find out about yourslef, while doing 65 on the freeway, thank's for the info LeFox.Anyone else with a 03 xb9r reading this, check your damn bearings!

Finally figured out how to post photos, here is what the rear bearing did to my rear wheel spacer and what was left of the rear bearing itself after they cut it out.

hey guys.
same damn things happened to me this afternoon comin home. felt like a flat tire. pulled over. tires was great, but wobbled from side to side and sat on a bit of an angle. took a look at the side where the bearings are, just behind the belt type thing and i can see lots of shaving. im pretty worried. hope its just a bearing and nothin major. also hope i didnt do any other damage. i have an 06 uly by the way. funny thing is i had just had my bike in to get a tire fixed like 4 days prior. so im wondering if the shop screwed up putting my tire on. whats eveyone think?
thanks all.

would think that is the case here, since you would have the good bearings.
it is likely that they hit the spacer and dented the bearing.

thanks lefox, yah im pretty sure its a botch on there end. im sure i will have a fun time convinving them they will have some repairs to pay for now lol.

My girl friend had to replace the rear bearings on her 2008 XBCityX(11000 miles). We were riding some back roads and her bike started making a loud clanking noise. We stopped and then trailered it to Richmond Super Bike, who repaired it. They told us the factory bearings have a tendency to fail and if she had continued to ride, it could have locked up the rear wheel.
