repair fairing stay

Help Support Buellxb Forum:

in wanting to move on with the conversion, measured the distance between the right mount to the end of the where the turn signal mounts...7", then measured the left...4-1/2" to the longest point of the break (measured from the outside of the main mount).

wolfo...I know you're busy, so no worries:)

if anyone can help me out with the missing 2-1/2" of the left hand signal mount, it'll be much appreciated

Yea, I apologize about taking so long. I wound up having meeting Tues that went all night and it's just been rediculously cold so I haven't spent much time in the garage.

Just weld it up. Not a big deal really. It's Mag, I did a write up on it. I'm to lazy to search for it, but here's some of the pics.

found the thread, god the search engine here sux thread

Rod we used wasn't really the correct alloy, If I was doing it again, I'd try AZ101 rod. I think it would produce a better weld.

yea, agreed the search feature really lacks a lot... I remembered reading your thread, couldn't find it again, thanks, going to book mark it... just need the missing piece and I'll be ready for welding, cleaned the rest of the stay up over the weekend and removed the road rash off the left mirror using a fine file and a straight razor blade, ready for Fusion paint today after work

firefighter1c57...well, that sucks, need to tell your CO you've gotta get back stateside, it's an emergency:D been close enough to that sh!t over there...had my fill between Kuwait and Balad and that part of the world since '91 as a sailor/soldier/civilian contractor...been there, done that got the t-shirts:D

wolfo...you da man[up]:D

The fairing stay is aluminum which unless your a damn good welder is impossible to weld back without messing it up. My Buell was recently introduced to the rear end of a jeep liberty which broke off the tip of my stay. Epoxy is the quickest and easiest was to fix it. it's cheap at your local hardware store and it's dependable. Just cover the stay wit epoxy where it's busted and gently hit it into place with a hammer. and let it sit for a day. My break wasn't very bad but if the piece you are fixing will be under pressure (which I doubt it will on a fairing stay) I would brace the to pieces on the underside. Simple fix.

Robin did you happen to have the piece that was broken off as well? I do know a good TIG welder but would need some mag alloy rob and the connecting pieces.

Us AZ101 filler rod, and I'm certian the stay is Mag not aluminium as I welded one up already, ;) Oh, and welding Alumium is actually pretty easy... especially when compared to titanium, and inconel and mag and... [smirk]

fire.......................you're like the energizer bunny...keeps going and going:D:D:D

looking into the rod on the net right now

would this be a good idea to follow... after cleaning the area, preheat the casting to at least 275 degrees and use AZ101 filler rod and set your TIG welder to the same settings that you would for aluminum welding.
