Washington DC Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007. A young man played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approximately 2,000 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After 3 minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.

4 minutes later:
The violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the till and, without stopping, continued to walk.

6 minutes:
A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.

10 minutes:
A 3-year-old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly, as the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced them to move on.

45 minutes:
The musician played. Only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace.
He collected $32.

1 hour:
He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $100.

This is a real story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities. The questions raised: in a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ....

How many other things are we missing?

Complete Story

that makes me so homesick. . . :( can't wait for leave so i can go enjoy the dc metro again. and i have to say (i've walked by such musicians. . .maybe even on that day) when you are running around a busy city like that you are usually on a schedule and while you DO recognize the beauty at hand sometimes meeting your friend for coffee or some brews or getting to the DC united game is at the time more pressing than enjoying expensive instruments utilized by virtuoso artist. and as far as the children. . .im not going to let my child hang around some homeless bum (which is what 90% of them are) and risk getting robbed or allowing yourself to become so wrapped up in the performance that the thieves looking for easy targets around crowded metro stops come and help themselves to my shit. now there are times when you have the time to stop and smell the roses. but in the fast paced day to day of city life. . .it's not a luxury most can afford.

From the story it would seem that children were able to see the beauty .... The adults were not.... Now that is interesting!!!!

something snapped in me when I was at college, it was likely a combination of a lot of things but hanging with my train-hopping dumptster-diving buddy Jaye and losing my first love are some influences that come to mind. Either way I'm no longer the average person who takes things for granted. I feel sorry for people who don't "stop and smell the roses". Nice post.

Thats amazing!

I think it's so true, at least for area's of similar density. I'm sure it's a bit different in 3rd world countries.

Nice post!

The point is, when it's cold and people are late for work, they're not going to stop and listen. There is a time and place to stop and listen to music. Obviously that was not it. I'm not surprised by this story. I would have kept walking as well.

It is a great story, I'm going to read the whole article

good point on the cold dave. january is usually below freezing.january 07 also, 75% of D.C. homeowners were facing foreclosure. and the first waves of job loss were hitting the capitol city and NY. yes kids don't have to worry about getting canned and they are oblivious to the dangers around them. not saying i'm scared of the city. i'm 5'11 185 pounds and usually carry a pistol. but i don't let my wife and daughters walk around alone. article seems like some hippy shit to me :0 ) but ima leave it at that. no more comments on this post for me. sorry if if i rained on any parades!!

ridiculous. just because i am walking by a pub with the best IPA ever invented, doesn't mean that i need to get a drink right now. i can enjoy it on my own schedule and my own terms. responsibility means not smelling every rose and getting shit-faced.

unless you are on leave.

A US Soldier returning home from the War in Iraq sat down to some long awaited rest simply to watch television.

He turned on the Tonight Show with David Letterman. As they began the show they spoke shortly of 6 US Soldiers who had died that day in Afganistan, then switch to a topic that was days old, Micheal Jackson. They went on and on for nearly 6 minutes on how much Micheal Jackson had impacted the country and how much he will be missed. Even a moment of silence was asked to be had during a Congressional Meeting in Micheal's name.

A man who entertained millions and dies at a relitivly old age of an illness deserves a moment of silence?

Thus the 4,332 KIA Soldiers and Marines deserve only a blurp and are overlooked for a past entertainer?

Men and Women putting their lives at extreme risk so we can enjoy our day to day activities and listen to the music put out by an entertaiiner IMO are much more important than that one entertainer.

Many say the war is old, and the Dead are just doing their job but I ask of you to step back, try to place your feet into the foot steps not of that Marine or Soldier but of the ones who have lost that Loved One and try to say the war is old and unworthy of a proper report or less deserving than a single individual who simply entertained, one that did NOT Sacrifice.

The night before the burial of her husband's body, Katherine Cathey refused to leave the casket, asking to sleep next to his body for the last time. The Marines made a bed for her, tucking in the sheets below the flag. Before she fell asleep, she opened her laptop computer and played songs that reminded her of 'Cat,' and one of the Marines asked if she wanted them to continue standing watch as she slept. "I think it would be kind of nice if you kept doing it," she said. "I think that's what he would have wanted."

My point to this post in compairison to the musician is we take Life and all we have for granted.

Very few people actually realize each and every day how well they have it.

So next time you begin to bitch about your order being wrong at a resturaunt, paying to much for gas, or needing to wait in a long line that you have choosen to do be grateful that you arre there and you are able to enjoy what is to come. Think of the great meal you are able to eat, twist you are able carve, or the roller coaster that will leave your blood pumping.

Life is to short enjoy every second and do your damnedest to benifit as many others as you can before you die.

people are going to work have things to do..i dont care whos there..america is at a point where we dont stop to smell the roses..most work two jobs ..people are burnt out..no time for that nonsenses

I would hardly call it nonsense. I do understand being on a tight schedule and not having time to stop to appreciate something beautiful like Bach violin sonatas but let me propose this: Instead of Joshua Bell, Heidi Klum was having a nude photo shoot in that same subway. Do you still think no one would have stopped?

Its kind of funny I started to read this post at lunch today but stopped in the middle because I didnt have enough time I thought. It wasnt that my lunch was over but I thought I could do more with my time. When I got home I went back and read it. So I did the same thing all those people did, does this make me a bad person? I dont think it does.... What I think is we are all programed to be this way, we have to make the best of our time we can untill we get a good slap in the face and realize all the things we are missing in life. I may have over analized it a bit, but I think we are all guilty of this. Pay attention to everything tomorrow because you never know what you missed today.
