I've had my '03 XB9r for about a year now and the speedo and tach haven't worked since I bought it. The previous owner and a good friend of mine had it taken to Harley before my purchase but they couldn't diagnose the issue. Does anyone have any ideas? The speedo and tach are digital correct?

granted it has probably already been done but I would first start with fuses and connector pins.

Everything else in the cluster works properly. The speedo and tach both do not work and my understanding is that it is a digital tach/speedo. Anyone have details on how a digital tach/speedo work?

Do the needles do the sweep when you turn the bike on?

Sounds to me like a grounding or power issue. Verify that you have a good ground connection on the front of the frame. Also check that the constant and switched power are both there.

Buellysses, the needles do turn when the ignition is powered, other than that the needles don't work. I will verify the other connections tomorrow.

Nookie, I believe the fuses are all good. Are you referring to the "ACC 7.5A" fuse? I will have to take a tester to them tomorrow to confirm.

Thanks both of you!

Kyle

**** it, just take it off. its more fun when you don't know how fast you go, that's what i did lol. but if it ends up being your cluster i have one for sale for a 04 firebolt.xb12

Fock, while I do agree with you, but because the cluster is digital, the odometer doesn't work either. I would like that the most for service, selling, gas purposes, etc...

Hmm, that's an interesting one nka.

The only thing I can think of would be to get yourself a decent DMM that measures frequency (or an oscilloscope if you can get your hands on one) and check the VSS wire coming out of the ecm. Get the rear of the bike off the ground and see if the frequency coming off the VSS changes with the speed of the rear tire. That should lead you either towards a bad ECM or a bad gauge cluster.
