Stained Frame

Thanks polkiejoe, I'm from the U.K. and have never heard of those polishes :) I need to fix the problem first, any idea whether I need to change both the grommet and crankcase breather or is one more prone than the other to give out? Anyway thanks to all for your comments and I hope to have the beast looking good real soon. Oh and the breather mod was a doddle to do, not ridden enough since to comment on change in performance...... but the red filter looks good!

The grommet can just be replaced. Just check and make sure the plastic valve is not cracked also![up]

Ive got a similar problem, but nowhere near as bad as yours kitfoxkid. The marks on mine are next to the filler cap and looks like fuel splashes. I cant get the F****R off with anything.
I am in UK also, where are you based?.

Hello Yorkshirelad. I'm from Yate, near Bristol. I'm going to fix problem first then I'll let you know how I get on with the clean up. I've tried various degreasers, wax type polishes.... someone has suggested evening it out by spraying the frame with wd40! Hmmmm not too sure about that, perhaps you could try first :)

Again thanks to polkiejoe, I'll try and get the things out this weekend.

Yourshirelad: Check your breather for the gas tank. It has the hose coming out of it on the right hand side. Take off the cap with the 2 allen heads or star bolts?? cant remeber... but there is a gasket under that that I have seen rip and when the bike is leaned over the fuel will spill out onto the frame. Worth a look at!;)

Thanks polkie but the stains are on the left side!!
Ive already tried WD40 before you suggested kitfoxkid, it doesnt work.

I tried the polish last night. It might have helped slightly, but the stains are still there.

Wouldn't it be very strange that oil would be able to stain the finish on the swingarm and/or frame? I would have thought oil would be able to be wiped off without staining. And wouldn't it hang around as a thin film on the metal to be noticed as the source? I'm not saying it's not the oil, but it just seems strange that it wouldn't be noticeable enough to see and wipe off.

Puzzled.

Its strange, you go for a ride and when you get back the staining is worse! Anyway, I've ordered my grommet (£3.80 due next Thursday) and bought some S100 which they recommended would to remove staining. Didn't work :-( however, they were making a big deal about it being a 'painted' frame and swinging arm, which got me thinking......... so out came the 'T-Cut', I've only done a small area, but it looks like its working! I'll give it a more thorough go over the weekend and let you know.

I seem to have the same problem with my '07 XB.

The big ugly stain occurred right after my very first washing of the bike. I think the main culprit causing that one was that my inspection sticker (high on left front fork) had an air bubble under it. I think some S100 cleaner got down in there and did not get rinsed out. When I went for a ride after washing, it blew out & onto the frame. That's my theory anyway.

I have stained streak of run marks all over the frame. Oddly enough, I'm fairly certain that some of it is caused by water. I know this is tough to believe, but there are streaks like the one by my brake caliper in several places on the bike such as the low point of the airbox cover where water collects and runs out. I'm now very diligent after I wash the bike to make sure I get it all dried.

You have my deepest sympathy, I'm still trying various lotions and potions to get mine clean...... no luck yet.

my 09 XB12Ss has splatters of discolouration that have appeared on the swingarm. The only thing close to this is the breather that exits near the rider heel guards.I have tried a lot of products to no avail and i wonder if it would be covered under warranty. Its not my fault and my bike is mint condition.Would this be a warranty type of thing or am i being over sensitive?

mine had a vent for the transmission ziptied to the shock right behind the fan. it stained the right side of the frame. i got no cures either.

Mine has the trans vent zipped to the same place too. The staining on the right side is different to the staining on the left, perhaps the left are water stains? Someone must have sorted this somewhere....... surely?

I have the problem with fuel splattering onto the swingarm on an 08. I extended the fuel vent hose about 3 inches & forward. My swingarm looks like shit, but at least it's not too noticeable. I was thinking about a warranty claim.
These frames should not stain this easily, especially with oil-based fluids.
