Get yourself the right side airscoop. It will keep the bike cooler and hopefully run smoother. My fan only kicks on after being stuck in traffic on really really hot days. Ordered mine from the dealership for $64 if I remember right.

Will do the RSS as well. I thought there were different versions of it, and wanted to compare all side by side before buying. Does anyone have a list of all the options available?

Hey guy, (usually) you won't have to Gap the NGK plugs. They are gapped at factory. Just remove those installed and check with the wire Gapper. Just Slip it in there and 35 thousand is the gap. If you need to regap them just take A Flat screwdriver and Slip the(TIP) of the Flat Screwdriver and pry up don't let it touch the Center Electrode Tip it is somewhat Fragile and will Chip.
Most times people will send them back if they are (new)and exchange for a different pair if there is a problem. You cannot bend the Tip back and forth more than Twice so Small steps to get it right the first time is a good practice.
ON the type of Right Side Scoop check the fitment for your year of Bike that you Own.The Ulysses Comfort kit[May Fit} the Bike with little or no real Modding changes .This kit is a life saver for you and your Bike. There's a right side Heat Shield that works great especially in the summer.
American Sportbike may be able to get that. I picked mine up [Ulysses Kit] at Harley Dealership it was the Cheapest plus no shipping chg. Might want to get one of those soon as you can so as to keep the wait time down. There are some other places but the Dealer Here so far has been Buell Friendly. It's somewhat price wise by some too much for the Comfort Kit, but it bolts right on and saves the wear on the fan and when in Motion cools Very well.I'm Glad to hear that the Fan Comes on AFTER the Engine has been Shut down. This is important to keeping the rear cylinder and Front one cooled down due to the Expansion rate of Metal while sitting. The Coughing is Either due to TPS OR Heat Issues the the Warranty Dept had to resolve by Reflashing the ECM with the 2010 XB Fan run program. This Fan Program is the Best HD/ Warranty could come up with on short notice. It will turn on the fan by Speed Above 12/miles per hour AND By Temperature. The Fan will run while the bike is moving and will shut Down when Stopped. If Stopped long enough in Idling, the fan comes on by Temp. Get the Bike as good as you can running wise and if the Dealership IS Buell friendly get them to reflash the ECM with it for better cooling. My 08 and 09 XB12r bikes had this done because of that same coughing especially on take off when hot and this Option helped greatly.
Remember the Throttle works differently than Foreign Bikes and has to be feathered gently in Traffic or on the Road Steady but smooth till you get used to how it feels. Take your time and it will come together.*Jimi

Thanks for the info. I'm going to get the NGK 9's sometime hopefully this weekend, and am going to get a RSS sometime soon. From what I understand, the ulysses comfort kit has the RSS, the heat shield under the seat, and the heat shield on the header, right? Honestly, I just want the RSS, I don't like the look of the heat shield. I think I saw a RSS on buellsterparts as well. I may ride to the local harley this weekend to see if they have one and if they are buell friendly...and will ask about the ecm flash for the fan logic as well. So the new fan logic still has the fan run after the bike is shut off, right?....based on temperature?

Forget the fan logic, doesn't apply to your bike and sounds like it is working fine. RSS is a good thing down there, and the parts needed have been posted 100 times. Post a pix of the plugs and your AFV reading?

RSS is a good thing down there, and the parts needed have been posted 100 times.

that's not very helpful....lol. I think I've seen about 5 different versions of the RSS, and can't find them side by side as far as comparisons, that's why I wanted to wait to buy it until I did more research. I'll probably just end up buying the factory RSS.

Will post a pic of the plugs hopefully this weekend and try to get one of the AFV as well. I know though when I reset it and did a TPS reset last weekend it was almost at 100, it was 99.X. That was after hundreds of miles of riding.

Yes they get posted a lot but over time they also get deleted over time. There is a lot to read & Some have better luck just asking especially if they are new to Buell bikes or the Forum, it doesn't matter as long as you get the help you need.
Check around for your parts, whatever you need. Some make their own Scoops and Buellister has good used parts and American Sportbike (New parts)as needed also the Dealership does, to upgrade your bike to todays Traffic Situations.
The Comfort Kit comes with 3 parts & does a good job for what it is designed and intended for. The Shield really isn't attractive but does the job. I figure most will just put on the Right side Scoop. I have 2- whole 55gal., drums of Rear Cylinder heads off of Buells. Mostly the Xb9s- And older XBs-02/03/04/05/ Models & 5/Newer 08/Ulysses as well, before the Reflash was introduced. The 08+ XBs have the Newer fan program for better cooling.
I have yet to pull off the 45/degree, Heads on 08+ Bikes with the reflash.Unless they wanted some more horsepower. It takes more than Head work to Acomplish that.Depends on what you want. The Degree of Angle (45) the Heads are at, the Cooling on a V-Twin Tucked up as close as the Buells are in the Frame area needs the fans new program or old is a matter of Choice, good or bad choice as it will show in the long run.
I Have Been Building 4/cylinder Foreign Bikes & 2/cylinder Engines for 33years and have watched many Changes for the Better of each bike not to mention the yearly upgrades from the factorys.
If Riders want to Extend the life of their ride, a Cheap fan replacement OR ECM Reflash, is easy to do Compared to the Engine being removed for new heads and more than likely many other parts while down and out of the Bike as well. This really Depends Also on the Amount of riding you do.
As Far As forgetting the Fan logic, It's always a choice depends on how long you want your ride to last. I have to guarntee my work, I want our customers to come back.Good Luck.*Jimi

So when I go and ask the guys at harley about the reflash, it is the 08+ bikes that have the new fan logic?

I would ride my bike near every day if I could get it to the point of just maintenance, rather than chasing problems.

EDIT: Oh and I assume they charge for the reflash?

you want to get the OEM RSS, the one from the Uly comfert kit, but not the whole kit,

http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-prodshow/A17360.html

That one, that price, just under $60

Ummm and ya, get the NGK plugs, they come gaped from factory, DONT use a flat head screwdriver to mess with the tip of the NGK, they arn't flat so making them flat would be BAD!!! Both mine were gaped fine, I just installed them.

Thanks for the tips, will be going to harley tomorrow, and probably buy a scoop sometime this weekend.

Apple, the Flat TIP edge of the Flat Screwdriver is to GENTLY push up(pry)it open, the Spark plug gap,(IF) it is improperly Gapped Maybe Accidently bumped Closed it does happen on installation at times in tight areas. I've been doing this a long time 33/years! Now it doesn't matter if it's Tapered or Solid tip, As Long as you don't touch the Inner Electrode with a hard tool. They are fragile and can Chip. That is why a wire (Gapper) is needed for NGK plugs. There are other brands also.Don't Step on my post especially if you aren't sure what I'm talking about.Just ask next time, and I'll explain for you. *Jimi[confused]

Snrusnak,Yes with the Age of the Bike they will need it for about an hour(Hourly Chg .)if the Guy is good with Buells. The 2010 XB fan program is the Easiest Reflash to do for a Buell. The Digital tech.2 that HD uses is a Tool Harley Davidson Techs use from Kent Moore along with Technoresarch and others will Reflash your ECM with the new program. This will get you in the Right Direction to putting the Bike in Order ON the Cooling of your Engine, for the Next Steps you want to go.[IF],IT is a Heat Issue causing the Coughing and so on, or just the Map area the Tech will see that. If the inneractive Exhaust Actuator is the Problem that opens the Exhaust valve in the muffler they can be expensive. I'm Assuming the Exhaust is all Stock unchanged. If you intend to Keep the Quite Stock Exhaust it will Function well. If you open up the Exhaust(louder) it will work the same. Post up and let us know how it goes. Hope you have a Cheap fix. Might want to GET an Est., before you have it OKed to fix.Good Luck.*Jimi

I have a 9 not 12, so now exhaust valve. I plan on opening the muffler up in the future, figured this would only help cut down heat as it would flow out of the exhaust better rather than being trapped in it. Going to go try to get plugs today and check out harley...

yeah I like the 9s it's A great bike! Rode one in Europe years ago, those bikes have some Potental to do a lot with. She is the Mother of the XB12R. The Econo Drummer would work well for your 9 It won't have that tin can just got bolted on to my bike sound. We use KD Fabrication Regular, good solid work a great family Business. I bought the Harley Davidson Direct Link Race/Kit for My uncles Shop, I'm the only one here to really use it. I'm teaching about it as we go along. Some of the Older Techs don't want to mess with it Till they see me adjust or problem solve with it. Harley Davidson Direct link Race Kit works good once you work with it several times. I have the older Version ECM SPY and the Newer Version for the 08+ Bikes. Those Experts have really done a lot of hard work to Help out the Buellers. I would rather use ECM SPY, it works good and after using it the past 8 years w/newer Versions & Drivers from FTDI is Quick and Efficent. Just for finding the problem is worth having it. I myself don't think I would have bought my Street/XB12R-08 or built the race 09 XB12R Buell at all if not for ECM SPY advantage. I have always had with any Fuel injected bike some extra advantage for working on the Electronics and Yes(Manipulating )the system for up grades & Keeping the Bike out of their Shops. Honda Has it-SPY-Type/Programs & Yamaha has it and so on. I'm on those Forums as well. Well its Beautiful today and monday will be here Quick enough, My honda/Rc51 needs to get ridden. I'm hoping that your bike is an easy fix. *Jimi

Getting plugs tomorrow(worked on the house all day today). Will order a RSS probably as well...

Got the plugs (9's) today. Didn't even realize they were the iridium ones(cool). I forgot about how much of a PITA the rear one is to get to lol. Got them changed, and will post pics of the old ones shortly(they were the 8's). Front looks lean, rear looks rich, but I'm no expert. The bike seems to idle much better, start quicker, and run better and stronger. Right after starting it had a sputter/miss the first couple take offs then I guess it got used to it and was fine. Had one REALLY loud backfire through the intake and otherwise rode much better. Still stumbled about 2 or 3 times on a 30 min ride, but it was much better, and the main thing I noticed is the bike seemed to stay MUCH cooler. The only time the fan came on was after I shut the bike off. So the plugs seemed to help, but not cure.

Rode the bike this morning and it rode BEAUTIFULLY. One hiccup upon takeoff once it was warm, that was all. I advanced the timing last night about 1 degree (I retarded it a while back as to put it where it was "supposed" to be, but it seems to run better with a little more advance. Thinking about trying another degree or two, and if it's worse just changing it back. It was also cold out this morning, so who knows if it'll still run good when it's warm out...

Glad you changed over to some good plugs the NGK-9s are a better plug for the buells,& heat range is better.Your old ones don't look bad at all. Maybe a little carboned depends on the mileage put on them. The fan coming on is a good thing Especially after you go for a ride.Once shut down it stays on to cool the rear cylinder mostly.
It helps with the front some but with out the fan our bikes wouldn't stand much of a chance. Much less be able to sit on it. The 2 speed fan will come on while riding most don't hear it due to the Low Speed is so Quite. It will when needed come on high speed usually when Engine is turned off or when you get caught in Traffic for a long time. The coughing you are describing is either Heat and possible Timing related or TPS issues and a combination of the One OR 3/will cause the problem.
So many Buellers expect the Throttle to respond like a foreign Bike Throttle but Alas not going to happen. Bliping the Throttle a lot will only make her cough. You can do it some on the Down Shifting with some practice.Lightly of course. An Individual Engine tune w/ ECM Spy is the only way to get it to respond. I really Feel like Erik Buell was Cheated out of finishing the Research they were involved when Harley Dropped the AXE as so to speak. Can you inagine a 4 valve per cylinder V-Twin XB retooled with a interchangeable Super chip!
The Speedo would be around 175/instead.Keep at it and you will get it pretty good.*Jimi
