when i try and fire the bike up recently, it doesnt just start right up like it used to. it turns over, then it pauses for about a second, then it starts. what could the issue be?
2009 xb12r

Mine started doing the same thing recently. 2009 with 13,700 miles and a build date of 7/08. It's always on the battery tender and was wondering if the battery is starting to go away.

Battery possibly. Check ur fuses in the front fairing. The '09s might have had a stator issue, which would lead to a charging problem. Any mods done? Low mileage? 4 year old battery?

You pick up a flashlight and turn it on. The light is bright for a moment and then it fades.

You could check/replace the batteries or take the switch apart or change the bulbs. What's the first thing you would check?

Battery should show a load test of about 200CCA. Most battery places will test it free.

Mine has always tuned, paused, then turns over. Just assumed that's how these rolled. Owned it year and a half, haven't replaced the battery. Maybe I should!

Sometimes mine fires right up...sometimes mine turns over for a bit then starts...but my thought would be what part of the stroke it's on?...I dunno, haven't had any issues. Never takes more than a few second before it lights tho...could be low on CCA, makes for a sluggish fire up.

It's probably your battery! The reason for the pause is your engine is entering the compression stroke if your batteries are not at 100% it turns the engine slowly through the compression stroke and then it fires right up! Even if your battery reads 12+ it may not have the amps needed anymore!

Also if it fires right up it could be because when you shut it off the engined stopped just after the compression stroke! So when u try starting it it has room to turn over and gather momentum through the first compression stroke!

Lastly.. I have and xb12 and there is always a pause durring startup just due to high compression! I don't consider it to be a problem.

I have had this problem on my 06 XB12S, also. It is still tight on start up, but I have fixed the problem. I was not getting a good ground cable and hot lead connection on the battery. On the posts, check if the blocks are 1/2 blocks or full ones. Sometimes with the 1/2 blocks, it needs tightening. It is easily overlooked on batteries, if the fuses are not the cause. Best of luck!

battery tenders can be misleading showing fully charged on float mode with green light on. but the little green light does not show battery condition. if your battery is the original one Lucr chances are damn good it's enjoying its last days.

its the original. so my next question is, whats the best battery out there?
and i appreciate all the help

mine did this since new 2010..
not to say that checking for good cable connections won't help this problem.

Take off your seat and check your battery connections. The amount of vibration these bikes give off tends to make bolts and screws loosen over time. I had the same issue for a few days with mine and didn't think much of it till I took my seat off n was able to tighten the ground a half turn. I'd say check that n then check the starter connection. Add some dielectric grease to the connection points and you should be set. I have a 04' xb12r w the original battery n have never had a problem if my connections are tight. Don't keep the bike hooked up to a battery tender all the time, it's like keeping a cell phone constantly plugged in, the battery eventually won't keep a charge.

Motojoe if you still have the OEM battery I sure hope you only ride within a few miles of your house. Good luck-
