Kidd,
You are young, I was young, I hated gear and only would wear a helmet in the rain, and as a result have suffered more pain over the years than any one person should ever have to endure.
I will not call you a squid, and I am not an ATGATT kind of person, but as I am gathering reading this post, you have never been lucky to survive an accident so I will share some real information and no my opinion.
We all risk our lives when we put a leg over, gear or not, however less gear equals more risk period.
"I ride safe", there is no such thing as a "calculated" risk when riding on public roadways, you are just another target for the drivers that have more ******* problems than I am going to get into here.
I don't always wear gear, but I do always wear denim pants, boots that cover my ankles, and good riding gloves, this is important in getting out of a low speed crash.
When I say getting out of I mean to walk away even if it is to the ER for staples or minor injuries.
Helmet. My last accident was major, and I typically would not wear my helmet, but since I was vacationing in a state that required me to I was and it saved my life no exaggeration.
Injuries. A list, 5 broken ribs, broken femur, fractured sternum, broken clavicle, 50 staples in the top of my head, road rash. I have scars, I have trouble walking, one joint or another always hurts and I'm only 32.
Crashing sucks, it sucks less with at least some gear on (I know) just think about it before you make it a norm to go shorts and sleeveless.
The worst part well one of the worst parts for me was coming home and looking at my young daughters faces when they saw me in the condition I was in. Imagine having to look at your mothers face from a hospital bed. Do what you can to prevent that from ever happening.
It is your choice, I hope you never experience any of the things I have with or without gear.
