Trying to fix an issue with my trans on my 04 XB12r. When i got the bike with 18k on it . it would occasionally jump out of First gear from a stop . Sometimes I could get first to engage and hold on the second try and sometimes I had to just slip the clutch from 2nd to bypass the issue . Fortunately (sarcasm) my crank went south at 20k and i split the cases to have it rebuilt by dark horse which presented the tremendous opportunity to fix the tranny prob as well. Bought a new shift fork for 1-2 just because it is hard to tell a "bent" one that isn't really fubar'd . I'm seeing some wear on the first counter, third counter and a bit on the shift drum but needing an educated opinion as to how much is too much . The bike shifted fine in all gear before the teardown it just "popped" out of first at inconsistent times from a stop ( bike in neutral). Thanks in Advance J. Ekins

Can you post some close ups of the edges of the dogs? They don't look bad but more detailed pics would help.

I would definitely replace the shift drum.. that gouge can't be helping the forks transition smoothly at all.

The dogs look "servicable" to me.. I would probably dress the "wear flash" a bit before re-installing..

Understood on both those points . Thanks a ton for the help! Looking forward to having this machine retired from "project " status and back in my rotation of running bikes.

after 30 plus years working on motorcycles, all makes and models from aprilia to zundapp,2 3 and 4 wheelers. If theres one thing I have learnt replace or get repaired both gears with dogs and the shift drum YOU don't want to do it twice and dogs sometimes only need a couple of thou wear to cause trouble. I would sooner reuse a shift fork. that I have checked for straightness.

Joe, I may have some gears you could use in place of ones you think the dogs are too worn on. PM me with a list of the gears and I will look through my tranny stash. Most everything I have came from my bike and are in really good shape.
