So i have had this noise for the past couple of months now. It seems to happen when the bike is warmed up. If i hog on it when im in the lower RPMs (2k or so) i get this very hollow rattle sound. Like someone shaking a BB in a tin can. I have never noticed it when the bike is cold. Defiantly sounds like an engine noise. Anyone have any thoughts?

Hmm... the rivets that held my timing cover got loose and caused a rattle at low rpm. Easy fix if thats whats wrong w yours.

I dont think thats it. This almost sounds like the valves slapping around. but i have never heard of this happening on our motors?

That is the hardest thing with xb's...isolating engine noises. They are inherently loud as it is, especially in the valve train. Throwing this out there...pinging? Detonation? Sounds like BB's at that RPM when you get on the throttle.

i guess that is a possibility. I run nothing but premium fuel though so i dont know why it would ping. But its defiantly ******* annoying.

Annoying for sure, sounds like a damped steel ball in a can, not to high pitched but constant.

pinging, these bikes dont like low rpms, it ping cause too much air rushes in and map sensor maxes out and the fueling cant compensate. its just like having a huge huge cam shaft with lots of lift in a V8.

WTF r u talking about here? XB's with map sensors?

zeroflat: these motors can tend to "rattle" a bit in warm weather at lower rpm's in a higher gear if you load them hard. nature of the beast. have you checked your horn mounting bracket per chance? just a thought but they will rattle like hell if loose or cracked.

no i will check it out. i never thought of the horn. my guess is its probably the motor like you said. i really only notice it when its hot out.
