Hey,
My 09 xb9sx stranded me today on the way to work. I stopped for gas, filled up, turned the key back on...lights did everything the same but when I hit the start button all the lights went off. Dead. I thought it was the battery so I got a jump from a friend (car wasnt running) and it started right up but when I removed the cables from the battery the bike died again.

Any ideas on what is wrong? I had to leave it at a gas station and get a ride to work.

Thanks, Luke

Still could be the battery. I'm no expert on electrical stuff though...

Actually that would lead me to think even more that it's a dead battery(unable to hold a charge). Or possibly loose battery terminals, check that they are tight.

^^2 dead battery + possible bad charging circuit. The car is supplying enough voltage for the bike to run but once you remove that the bike doesnt have enough charging capabilities to stay running. Fuel injection will not run without a functioning charging circuit and battery.

Theres several "how-to's" on testing the voltage reg, stator, etc. Also check your grounding straps its possible ones so loose its unable to complete the circuit.

thanks everyone. It was odd because when i hit the start button and everything went out. I switched the key back and forth and everything stayed off. A few minutes later after i pushed the bike out of the gas station i turned the key and the speedo light up. Is there a main grounding strap somewhere? I just bought the bike a few weeks ago and this happened, its was actually my first fill up, so not familiar with buells yet.

This is exactly what happened to me on Saturday! On the highway, stop at an exit for gas, turn key, nothing happens. I got a jump from a pickup truck, same thing happened to me. Remove the jumper cables, and it dies. Eventually got a friend with a trailer to haul my ass home. Everything I've researched says dead battery, and mine was at least 3 years old. I plan of buying one tomorrow, add will post up with my results. Btw, mine's 2005 xb9sx for reference sake.

I will be getting a new battery since I'm sure this is the orginally and is 5 years old and the bike doesnt even have 5000 miles.

Jonny, please let me know what happens with yours. Glad i'm not the only one. I'm going to inspect the bike out tonight. Finally got a friend to meet me after work to bring it home.

Agree with Cosworth.....before buying a battery, CLEAN/scuff the terminals and make sure they're tight. Mine did something very similar a few seasons ago, and although the cables weren't 'sloppy' loose, they weren't very tight. (A slight twist and they were loose). So....I just cleaned them up and made sure they were tight again, and it was OK. STILL the original HD battery from 2005! It IS on it's way out though....if it sits much more than a week, it clicks before it starts. I will often double check they're tight when I service it about every 2500-3000 miles.

I tried swapping batteries with my girlfriend's Blast originally (after I got the bike home on Saturday). Granted, that battery is also like 3 to 4 years old. When I got it fully charged, I gave it a start, but it just clicked really fast. I know it wasn't a very scientific experiment, but I'll check the wires for tightness when I get home. Regardless, I'll need a new battery for mine (she wants hers back lol), and I don't want to wait for the back ordered Big Crank, so going to Batteries Plus. Theirs is 200 CCA, is that enough?

I believe Lunatic couls ship you one....I'm not sure if they're 'wet' or not. I KNOW he has some though.

My money is on just about all of the above suggestions that it's a battery issue. The XB is just about the harshest application you could possibly pair a battery to. It's got heat, vibes, large amp draws, and a fan that runs after the bike's quit charging!

Check your negative battery cable for corrosion, my bike was giving me problems similar to the OP symptoms and it turned out my negative battery cable had corrosion built up in the insulation. Made a new negative cable and now there is no problems with the charging system, just my 2 cents.

I had just replaced my dead battery 2 days ago. Same symptoms. The battery I put in there was covered under a 24 month warranty and was no cost to get a new one. The original battery at batteries plus was for $99 and I bought it on 1-13-2013 and they exchanged it. Appears that the price has gone up to $109, or they changed the battery, can't tell since there is no picture but it is the only one listed with a 24 month warranty.
Batteries Plus Uly Battery
The battery probably would have lasted longer but It did not have reliable power while it was in storage over this multiple freezing days winter. There are cheaper batteries with only a 1 year warranty, but so far it has been worth the extra $24 to get a 2 year warranty.

So I finally got the bike home. I took a volt measurement and it was 4 volts. It's on a trickle charge now just to see if the bike will turn back on. I'm going to look at buying a new battery. I'll use the search function since I'm sure it discussed, I just want to make sure this doesnt happen again. Not a fun day.

I guess I should ask. Is it normal for a battery to get that low? I mean I started it up this morning and only rode 10 miles before stopping and it dying.

I have an extra battery in my garage for my Yamaha vtwin.not sure of the make but it says GS gt12-b4 on it. It is the correct size, will that work as a replacement?

I would say that if it started and drove to the gas station fine, then after terming it off, it wouldn't restart, and is now found to be at 4 volts, you most likely have a bad stator which was not providing power to the battery and you were discharging it as you rode it. Just my 2cents.

If it started & ran fine, then wouldn't start at a gas station?

Chances are it's a stator, rotor or VR. Battery isn't charging right.

luke: in all probability your battery has a dead short in one or more cells. your voltage reading is abnormally low. a trickle charger in this situation is a complete waste of time. the accurate method of diagnosis is to give your battery a 10 amp charge for approx. 20-30 minutes....check voltage.......should see approx. 12.2.......install........see if bike will start. if not then battery is junk. if it does start keep it running and check voltage across terminals. you want between 13.4 and 14.4 at approx. 3000rpm.
