xb9sx left me stranded on way to work

Update, I charged the battery all last night and today. It read 12.73 v, plenty to start the bike. I turn the key on, normal speedo operation. Hit the start button and all I heard was a "Click" and everything is dead again. battery was checked again and is at 12.47.
Any ideas.

In my experience with an 09 ULY, the 2 times I had a battery go bad, my headlight burned out first? Maybe coincidental, but I think maybe the charging system is working like a mofo to try to charge the battery?

im not sure. the bike wont even do the normal speedo operation. Battery is still reads over 12 volts but nothing happens when I turn the key to the on position. I checked all the fuses and they all passed.

Okay so I have an extra battery, put it on the buell and she started right up. I guess my battery is just completely dead. I'm going to get a new battery and I'll go through the check list just to make sure my charging system is fine.

Does anyone know the oem battery number from harley? I can find replacement numbers of other brands but not that one

If it is the same old battery I would still not trust it, get another trusted battery that can put out the amps. Sometimes it can read good voltages but if it can't produced the amperage required to start your bike it won't. Not sure if most auto parts stores can test an MC battery but I got mine at Batteries Plus and they charged and load tested before they pronounced the Battery Dead.
If this is a New battery I would try to jump start it to be sure it is not a bad battery and also test the voltages of the system while it is running to see if it hits the the voltages stated above to know that the charging system is working.
If this is a new battery and will not or very poorly jump starts then would definitely check the wiring to the starter, ignition switch, harness, battery cables, ground wires, go crazy.......till you find it at least. I would not waste anymore time trying to jump a 3 or more year old battery that you have already charged up and tried to start the bike with.

Went to HD and got a new battery. at idle across the two terminals is 14.29volts. Is that normal?

yes, charging system operates at like 14.4 v or something like that. I believe it should read 12v when bike is not running. When adding a load(I guess on the bike that'd be like headlights, horn, etc) should drop slightly. On a car it's normal to drop to below 14v when starting AC, lights, etc. Should recover though almost fully.

Yep. When the bike is off its like 12.74, when lights go on it drops. Looks like it was nothing more than a battery hopefully.

If it happens again, check your fuel pump. It's a known issue. It could be that just moving the bike enough, or filling it with gas, is enough to "un-short" the wire by moving it off the stupid clip that has a sharp edge.

It's a terrible design, but a known issue and it causes the symptoms you're describing. See mine before re-wiring; adding extra insulation; and grinding/sanding the inside of the clip to have a rounded edge rather than a 90° milled edge.

Bought an battery at Batteries Plus on Friday, around $110 with $10 rebate. Rated 220 CCA, but read much higher in store. Bike started up immediately, no problems. Well, new problem now with a short somewhere. I'm wondering if it's due to the extra spacer used on aftermarket batteries? Keeps blowing my ACC fuse. I checked connections, grounds, turn signals (aftermarket leds), replaced fuse, and all was well, until on my way to work today, shorted out again and lost my tach, speedo, etc. Battery tie down is broken, so that's my next step, fixing that. Anyone else have problems like this with aftermarket battery? (sorry if this is thread stealing, will start a new one if asked).

Every time I change the battery, I will search it on the internet for a long time to see the reviews and get the suggestions from other guy. Not very familar with it.
