Anyone like this idea? Self Contained Data Logging Unit

wow were you in crazy scientist mode, just hid in the basement until you finally had a breakthrough.

Haha, something like that. I originally posted this about a year ago right as I was finishing up college. I underestimated the interference a full time job can have on free time. I'm also bouncing ideas off of one of my friends on how to refine the process of downloading data.

So after a long and boring technical discussion with my friend it seems like a Bluetooth based piece of hardware combined with an Android smart phone could be the best way to streamline the data logging/real-time ECM view process. Does this strike anyone else as a good idea? I already have a Bluetooth development boards on the way to try this out.

I have done some android programming before and have verified that it can support the RFCOMM profile which would work great with the Buell ECM (basically serial port emulation). I ordered this breakout board from sparkfun to test the idea:

I can take care of programming the back end of this. Is there anyone on this forum that has experience with Android GUI programming (not my strong point)?

I'd be super-interested in a plug and play setup. I'm not Linux savy and am super-short on time, but would love to be able to log a bunch of data and being able to do it to a android phone would be awesome, especially if the phone could displace various bits of data in real time (like engine temp - ideally some sort of interface where you could easily customize what is displayed). Heck, I'd even think about permanantly mounting a cheap android phone in a waterproof case or something to the airbox cover. How cool would that be?

get a new phone!...
is this project for 2008 bikes on up or just lower year ones?

I have a 2007 XB12s, so obviously that is the focus of my initial work. However, the 2008+ ECU has been backwards engineered and documented, so it is possible for that to work; I just don't have a way to test it.
