Replacing Your Exhaust Packing

What is Exhaust Packing?

Exhaust packing (pillow) is typically made from long strands of fiberglass matting or textured strands. The fiberglass packing acts as a layer of insulation, much like the insulation used in the walls of your home, and is used to absorb a generous amount of sound created within the muffler.

What does it do?

Exhaust packing is designed to maximize the performance of your exhaust pipe in two ways. First, packing quiets down the rumble of your exhaust system by forcing the escaping gases to pass through the thick layers of fiberglass. The sound waves generated by the motor are trapped and absorbed within the matting, reducing the actual amount of sound emitted. Secondly, the exhaust packing supports the inner core of the exhaust pipe, which runs across the length of the muffler, isolating it from excessive vibration that could damage it over time.

What should I do?

After a while, the packing material within your pipes deteriorates, often due to being burnt off by the heat generated by the escaping gases. Luckily, Barker's Performance offers replacement kits for easy replacement of your exhaust packing. Our kits are affordable -- only $20 -- and easily to install. Replacing your exhaust packing each year helps keep your exhaust; and your machine, running and sounding its best.

can the inner pipe be replaced considering that as the pillow wears the pipe will vibrate and wear the inner pipe?

Yes it can.

There were a few early version pipes that had a larger diameter screen that was allowing the pillow to prematurely blow out. The repair kit included a new inner pipe along with the new packing.
