Bike for GF - what to choose?

Yeah i taught my mom how to ride on a nighthawk 250 that I got for 300 bucks in perfect running condition and the thing is pretty clean.. Thing always runs to she has upgraded now to a Honda shadow 750 but it's still sitting in my garage and it always starts right up real reliable bike. The only reason I'm not getting rid of it is cuz I pretty much let my friends ride it when I don't wanna cruise alone.

I would go with the Blast, that's what I started on and I now have moved up to a Lightning. But you don't want to start on something like a Lightning way to POWERFUL! My Blast is an 2001 and it's been a great bike just had to have the Carb cleaned and of course the boot replaced. The Blast is a perfect bike to start on and if she drops it she won't damage it too bad since the body is made out of the same material as golf balls. You won't have to worry about denting it or stratching the paint off.

I wouldn't recommend either - if she loves riding once she starts, she will be bored with both of them within 6 months. I'm liking the suggestion to give her your XB9 and move up to an XB12, or an 1125CR (we have a red one for sale).

Get her comfortable with the balance issues on a moped (if she doesnt have any experience with a motorized 2 wheel), then have her take the riders edge course with harley (dunp the blasts there as many times as she needs), then upgrade yourself with a 12 or 1125 (im sure you'll love your new bike as much as the one you have now)

xb9...no doubts about it....250's are a waste of time and money regardless...whether its a ninja, rebel, etc....if she likes riding you will be reselling it to get a bigger bike and they are hard to get rid of, and if she hates it you will be getting rid of it...xb9, blast, etc....no doubt in my mind

Not very proud of it but my 1st bike was a blast. I'd say blast or ninja250. On the other hand you could ride the sportster and not be totally embarased.

She's really tiny. She tried to seat on my xb9s (with the low seat) and she couldn't reach the floor at all, I think it would also be a problem on scg.
I was thinking to get her comfortable on blast and than try to lower my xb and pass it on to her and get me CR.
We'll see what future brings but for now pretty much decided that we'll get Blast. We gonna go on Tuesday to check it out.
Thanks a bunch to all of you guys/girls for your input.

Here's my 2 cents, for the same money (Almost) get the Sporty, a Blast is fine but if she's small like you say a sporty is a better starter bike. I would look for a 250 Honda, Yamaha or Suzuki first but if the sporty runs good get that one.

Am I the only one that read that title as "Bike or GF - what to choose?"

That may have been an easier choice anyway.

From a girls point of view I love my lightening and wouldnt go with anything else.... So I would say the Blast for sure, cause then she would have almost the same bike as you so that would make riding together more fun on a ride.

Plus if down the road if she or yourself want to get a XB9SCG she already knows how to ride the same kind of bike. And with my self I barely touched the ground with my XB9SCG but I got Icon riding boots with a wedge and works perfectly!

Happy shopping :)

my GF wants a bike too and she likes buells,(but not the blast she dont like the looks, but that would be my recomendation for first rider, the blast.), and she likes the sportster 883 iron &1200nightster look & other little cruiser types but i have shown her others bikes like the rebel and ninja 250 and for price and a cruiser show her these johnny pag motorcycles and i have seen a few custom rebel and GZ250 & boulevards that looked good blacked out or customized for the cruiser look.

show her some pics of some of custom blasts.

My girl wants a bike as well but she is only 4'9". One of my friends came over a couple of weeks ago and she sat on his Scg and holy crap she can touch the ground with both feet. When she sat on my Ss both feet were hanging and kicking. If she is that short Scg is the way to go! I think starter bikes are a waste of time my parents made my brother do it when he was younger and all it did was cost money for two more upgraded bikes.

My wife is 5'3" and she started on a 2009 Kawasaki Ninja 250, then later in the year she was riding my XB12Scg like a champ. I bought the Ninja new in 2009 with her in mind as a starter bike, and I will probably keep it for a while because her little brother is turning 16 in March and he wants to ride with us. We have the Ninja, Buell, and a 2011 Harley Dyna Superglide. My wife hasn't even been riding a year yet and she can ride all 3 of them without any issues. She does like the Buell the best though.

I think starter bikes are a waste of time

I would disagree with you slightly there crx, I believe there is significant value in getting a starter bike. While you are going to have to spend some extra cash in the future to upgrade you can't put a price tag on experience.

Once she gets her endorsement, let her rent some different bikes and see which one fits her the best.

The best starter bikes are ones that someone else buys new, doesn't destroy, then sells to another noob so they can add their "insults" without a huge financial hit.

I love my starter bike IT was NO Waste of Money , I'm still riding it and Have NO plans of ever getting rid of it. my Buell XB12R Firebolt.

some people need a so called starter bike we all gotta start somewhere on your first bike, some need to get some experience on a smaller lower powered bike, some dont, but some of those probably should have .
but if money is of concern look at it like this on a cheap bike when you lay it down no biggy no huge loss and lots cheaper to Insure too. if you start out on a bigger powerfull bike and WHEN not if you lay it down the cost can add up more and more in insurance too. some people need that starter bike to gain experience and confidence in thier riding skills, especially if they dont ride on a regular basis. you just have make the right decision because only you know how good or bad your riding skills are and be smart enough to not push way beyond your riding skills , thats when you F up and get hurt or dead.

have her sit on & ride the ones she likes , also I would recomend to her and anyone to take a Motorcycle Safety Foundation riders course.
