Buell XB9 oil recommendations?

I know that this has been covered in other various parts of the forum, but i saw some people who said 'engine oil and trans oil need to be different' and other people said that they used the exact same. Other people said to only use Vtwin oil, other said it didnt matter. I just wanted a straight forward answer with some organization, and like i said, we can lock/take this thread down. I just needed to know a solid answer.

I was just screwing with you :). Who the F cares if you repeat a thread...

You have to use motorcycle oil in the tranny, regular oil will screw up your clutch. You could use whatever 20w-50 you felt like for the motor. I use the same for both, then I can use the same bottle whenever I have to top either one off.

I am currently using Lucas 20w-50 full synthetic and a wix oil filter because I can get them at O'Rillys. 10.00 a quart and ~6.00 for the filter.

I change my engine oil every 3000-4000 miles and change the tranny oil every other oil change.

I actually cancelled my order from DK when i found out that i accidentally ordered "synthetic blend." I just ordered from JEGS and i got a K&N filter and Lucas 20w50 "High Performance" (for motorcycles)...and for 5$ cheaper than it was from DK too! :D

I bought my xb12s new in 04... Have used Harley (screaming eagle) Full syn. 20/50 since new.. Recently switched to royal purple and holy cow, bike has never shifted this well... As a matter of fact I would have never guessed in a million years it was capable of not clunking into 2nd... Just my 2 cents

This is what i use.

This past oil change I used Schaeffer's V-twin Racing Oil 20w50 for the engine, and Belray Gearsaver #75 in the primary...Haven't had any complaints. I have developed the dreaded rear base gasket leak, but that is besides the point. I was on a budget so the oil was $9/qt and the belray was like $11/liter...as opposed to redline which is like $13-14/qt.

Hooker: any motorcycle specific 20-50 oil will work fine in primary. whatever you choose for primary just make absolutely certain it is approved/rated for "wet clutch applications." do NOT use a GL-4 or GL-5 oil in primary as you can risk clutch damage/slippage.
NOTE: there is an excellent oil originating from the old Kendall refinery in Warren, PA using PA crude base stocks. i believe the brand is Brad Pitt. i've been using Angelina Jolie trans fluid in my primary for years so thinking her husband's oil would also be an excellent choice for our motors.

Seriously though, as snrusnak said...don't worry about it!! Amsoil 20-50 BIKE oil in both holes are good. Lunatic is right on about 'wet-clutch specific' lube in the primary though. I run 10/30 though when it gets much below 50 degrees here in the Northeast part of the country. :D

It says "it's perfect for motorcycles and other highspeed engines." but never said it was specifically designed for motorcycles

With the additives it has listed I wouldn't use that in my tranny, might want to contact Lucas and ask them. They have a 20w-50 full synthetic motorcycle oil and thats what I'm using.

i went out and bought a quart of "Valvoline Motorcycle 4Stroke 20W-50" with "superior wet clutch protection" lol if this isn't okay, i'll poop maa pants! it was pretty warm today (45 degrees at this time of the year in Illinois is pretty warm!) so it gave me an excuse to take a 20mi ride to autozone. the stuff only cost 5.69 a qt also, so the price was most excellent.

dude use what you want, but most use mobil, royal purple, or amsoil. Or of course HD. You KNOW these options will work.

I can't say I know about the bike specific Valvoline, but I do know their VR1 Race oil has a good bit of zddp in it. And yes....it IS an excellant anti-wear agent. It is REQUIRED on any any engine running a flat-tappet cam with higher than normal spring rates....in fact,I've been seeing a lot of older "stock" engines wiping cams out also. Valvoline also sells an "OFF-ROAD USE ONLY" oil....it is LOADED with good additives. I was talking to a Vavoline rep at the race shop about this exact subject, and he enlightened us to it. He GAURANTEED us a H/P increase...and I'm like..."yeah, sure.... they ALL SAY that!" But..... I personally seen an increase in torque and h/p on a little 331 small block Ford I was dyno'ing......Only about 3lb/ft of torque and 4 hp, on a 494hp engine, but it was "free"!! And yes....this dyno repeats run after run on a stable engine. We were seeing CONSISTANT 490.-- h/p, 368 torque.....took out Royal Purple, and put this in, and it was legit. :D

Welps! i have Lucas for the Swingarm and Valvoline for the primary. I got what i needed
