I have heard that Buells burn oil? Is this true, if so what would cause these engines to burn oil? Thanks Buelljek

every engine burns oil just how much depends on a miriad of factors as far as Buells mine doesn't burn much at all over 10k

Out of the 3 XBs i've had i 've had no issues with oil burn. I guess i've been lucky , i've had no major issues with any of them . KNOCK ON WOOD .

Mine burned a good bit when I first got it....5k miles. Burned about 4-6oz every few hundred miles. Now, with 10k miles on the clock it barely burns any.

i have owned 6 xbs and the lady has one and none of ours have oil issues... think this is more an myth from early tuber (when first released) or HD days than a buell thing.

If I go a month w/ out checking I can be upwards of a quart low. I'd say I hafta add about a quart between oil changes. It's been doin it since day 1. 04 xb12s.

Short answer. Yes

No oil burning issues with mine. 03 xb9s @ 9K mls. At least nothing I noticed between the oil changes.

I had a 03 xb9r and it would burn a maybe a 1/4 of a quart between oil changes. It was that way from day one. I was not easy on the bike at all though, it saw the rev limiter lots of times! :D

got my 04 XB12R this past February with 3400 miles. Didn't notice oil burn then, and now with 8k miles, still no oil burn.

My experience has been the same as marko138 and TooFst. Hopefully it will taper off and stop as the engine gets more miles on it.

most engines burn oil whether it be blowby or oil trapped in the corners that just accumulates and burns. bikes lean all different ways and oil trickles damn near everywhere.

My 98 tuber loses about a quart between changes but I do have a few small leaks nothing to bad lower jugs leaking. And the oil fitting where it goes into the tank. Not bad for it's age.

So it looks like I have a 90% chance that my buell will burn oil. Cant really drive too far yet, plastic off, no tags, and no insurance:p
Thanks guys, U ROCK! awesome posts. Seriously I never get a quarter of these reply's on other forum sites. [sad]

I've had my 9R since 2003 now with 12,000 miles. I add maybe 10 ounces of oil for every 3000 miles or so.

all engines do comsume oil ,but its not refered to as burning oil until its excessive and usually causeing smoke,as when rings wear out and valve stem seals fail.New engines often have rings not completely seated and consume more oil early in life.old engines consume more oil later in life as rings wear and as carbon causes them to stick in there grooves.AS for air air cooled engines, evaporation is a big factor.meaning, more extreme temperatures cause oil to vaporize more rapidly and get exausted after combustion, and also leaves through case and rocker vents. My 08xb has been the same as my 99s and the same as almost every aircooled motor ive owned.I just top the things off and ride the hell out of them.unless your crop dusting, dont worry be happy!

best answer yet perfect explanation BuellAddicted.
i was just reading this thread and was wondering if anyone was going to give a detailed explanation of why and how oil lose in the engine. also you could of looked in any service manual in trouble shooting under uses excessive oil, but buelladdicted gives the best explanation of all the whys of it.
