ECMSPY Blues

All previous attempts were run as administrator, I'll try the compatibility mode, but I've tested the virtual serial port using hyperterminal without an issue.

but I've tested the virtual serial port using hyperterminal without an issue.

Have you shorted pins 1 and 3 and had the characters echoed back at you in hyperterminal? If so, your computer and cable are fine.

Have you checked continuity between the USB & Duetch connector to make sure all are connected? Also, seen occasions where a pin/wire pulled out of the Deutch end - can be an easy fix.

Turns out the red wire (#1) didn't have continuity - I'll break out the gun tonight and patch it up, we'll see if that was the problem tomorrow morning.

More news:

It was recommended by the vendor to "resolder the connections" which I found odd, but did as instructed.

I believe the connectors were faulty. I took 3 terminals from the male portion of a 4 pin molex connector and fabricated female connectors (filed off the ends - that's another topic), which I then manually attached to the pins on the bike. I now have continuity on all wires, but nonetheless....

Results are still the same - communications time out.

Am I the only person on the planet with a Buell with a faulty ECM socket??

I'm slowly veering from growing frustration to just being flat out pissed. Something isn't right here.

Update - just got back from a shop who has an ECM datalogger, they were nice enough to only charge me 6 minutes labor to plug into the bike and see if there were any issues with the port itself.

They had no issues at all. It's obviously not the bike - and unless I have 2 laptops which are faulty, it's not that either.

Anyone got any ideas or should I move forward with trying to either A: get my money back or B: have the cable replaced?

I'd get it replaced. The vendor should stand behind it. He makes a little less, he has a happy customer.

Can you use a loaner?

Update:

I received a replacement cable.

I've now tried 2 cables, 3 laptops of 2 separate manufacture, I've taken my bike into a shop and had them pull data off the bike using the ECM port successfully.

I still get the same result.

Is there some fundamental step that I'm missing?

ECMSPY is installed, the prolific driver is installed, plug in the cable, it is assigned a com port...

Bike on, kill switch in the on position (as in the headlights are on).
Select the com port the cable was assigned in the device manager (today it was com 3).

Still when I try to do anything - Transmission timed out.

If I'm missing a step, please let me know - if I'm not, well I guess I'm out $40 and I give up.

I've never been so frustrated with something apparently so simple in my life.

Last effort - I reloaded a laptop with windows XP in case the operating system had something to do with it - no luck, same result.

I'm out of options. Working laptops, working cables, working bike.

ECMSPY just doesn't.

What year bike? 08 IIRC and up wont work directly with ecmspy? Not sure on that. My bike isnt that new. What about tunerpro? Tunerpro uses same ecmspy cable. See if TP can talk to the bike.

I know with my eBay cable, I had to remove the orange rubber gasket around the plug. The gasket wouldn't allow it to make a connection. I think the ID of the plug was larger and it kept from connecting. As soon as I removed it, I replugged it and had a connection.

if you think your the first person to miss something simple and get that frustrated, trust me, your not!

Well I'm having a similar problem tryng to do a tps reset. After I click on reset TPS it stops picking uo the tps??????? What were you doing wrong victor?

Biketavious, On the version of ecmspy some of us have..after you change tabs and click the reset button, its necessary to click the keys icon and connect again after you go back to the main tab. Once you do, you should be able to see the TPS reading and the digital representation of the gauges should respond to the throttle again.

what was it victor? dying to know.

It was the kill switch. Bike needs to be on, as well as the kill switch. D'OH!
