Engine light at high rpm....

Help Support Buellxb Forum:

Update,

So grabbed a (newer) voltage regulator, swapped it out, same issue. Had the voltmeter hooked up to the battery pushing like 17V+ at over 3500RPM.

Wtf...

Any ideas??

I'm currently at a loss, and im not trying to be rude, but i told you it wasn't the voltage regulator.

I'll be thinking about this today.

It's all good, I couldn't think of anything it would be other than the voltage regulator, other people had similar problems and that fixed it. Figured I'd give it a try. Bike has a newer one now and I can just throw the other up on ebay if nothing else cause it obviously isn't faulty.

Is what it is....I've been beating my head against a wall all night.

I'm at school so please excuse the relatively researched question...where exactly does the vr ground to. My only other thought is that its not working due to It being
grounded improperly?

The issue is happening at high rpm right?

Does it happen when your moving at high rpm? does it happen with the bike sitting on the side stand in neutral with a high rpm?

Basically the trouble code hasn't resurrected, only happened once...the issue I have is when it's at high RPM whether moving or in neutral the system seems to be producing enough volts to throw my ballasts into protect mode shutting off my lights, everything else works as far as I know but I'm avoiding riding it as of right now.

So yes in gear-moving as well as on stands.

I mean it's a possibility but they work normally at low rpm and I doubt both would crap out at the exact same time both High and Low Beams.

Have you checked the wires thoroughly?

Can you like start the bike, then rev it up and just have the lights shut off every time?

Is it just the headlights? What about taillight and turn signals?

All other lights are unaffected. For the most part I can rev it up in the same range and it kills them every time.

I went through the wiring last night in the front end and everything looks fine.

Ok, what electrical components do the lights share? A relay maybe? This is what I think happened:

You had some kind of power surge, it threw up a check engine light, and fried something in your lighting system. Since then the power surge has not reoccurred. So now your left with the damage.

So you've got an electrical component that is shared between the low and high beam lights. What HID kit do you have?

Lol. The issues are less entangled than one might think!

I think your hid kit is bunk. The engine light may have been caused by the sudden loss of draw caused by your lights being poop.

So, take a look and check every component that the lights share.

I'm at work now, I've got a pretty heavy school schedule till Friday. I'll post up more detailed information on the HID kit and so on once I have a minute to sit down with my sweety.

Alright, after 4 hours of sleep a term paper, with one more paper and work to go I ripped apart every ground and wire brushed the f out of It and the lights never went off. I'll test run her again tonight. If all goes well then ill ride her tomorrow to class.

Readings:
Bike off prior to start 12.6v
Bike running about the same.
Both beams on 12v
Just key 12.4
After ride 12.6
Running at high rpms it was in the 13's not much higher.

hmm, maybe you had something loose and it just wasn't vibrating enough at low rpm. ?? tis a mystery!

Just an update, as of now I'm going one step at a time and messing with one thing then testing. Last night I got home and rode it after cleaning some grounds and it seemed to be fine. All readings were within normal range and no issues on a short jaunt around the block(including a highway sprint). This morning however a quarter mile from the house and the low beam cuts out(I'm watching it like a hawk at this point). Took her back in and proceeded to clean up the ground wire for the front, wow is that thing a b***h to get too...took another jaunt and everything looked good and all the readings were good but we'll see....

Fun like never before.

R with headlight and engine light problems?

First thing to check is the ground wire inside the three-to-four connector of the headlight wiring harness. It corrodes inside the connector. I ended up jumping it. The fluctuations in the ground throw off the ECM for some reason and gives you the engine light.

Try this: turn lights on and just wiggle the connector. See if the lights go out. The engine light might start clicking: mine would.

Well long story short this is how the problem started.

Installed LED Blinkers, worked after I installed new flasher. Then same night the headlights went out while it was dark(which is how I noticed). Since then I've done an R to S tail swap but that hasn't changed anything. I went back to the old flasher and pulled the blinkers and have the same problem. Then One day last week after working on the problem I was on the highway headed to school and 5th gear and 3500 (bout 70ish MPH) the Engine light came on, I backed off to below 3000RPM and the engine light went off, revved up and it came on, then backed off again and didn't have the issue again. Trouble code stuff is earlier in the thread which lead me to replacing the VR but after I installed the new one I'm still having the same problem. As of now I'm just going ground by ground cleaning everything up and inspecting wiring as I go. I had the front end apart and have done the wiggle test on everything I can get my hands on with no results.

Eventually I'll figure it out lol
