enginr oil getting into trans oil

How hard is it to change a left side crankshaft seal?
Do I need special tools?
I am loosing engine oil not fast but about a quart every 2500 miles and thought it was just burning it. Today i noticed oil on my rear fender comming from the trans vent tube. Whwn I checked the oil level it was way over full. I am assuming the crankcase seal has gone bad. 2003 x1 3200 miles
I guess I am looking for advice on tackeling this job myself or hireing it out?
