Hey all. I'm thinking of doing a custom exhaust for my XB9 that is louder then stock, but quiter and less tinny then most exhausts out there which still retaining the stock look. Here is my idea. I gutted the stock exhuast and ended with this. My idea is to create a double chambered strait through exhaust with perforated tubing that will allow me to pack fiberglass/ceramic packing around the tubes to dampen the noise(reducing the tinny noise). Here is a quick drawing of what I am looking to do inside the exhaust.

The only issue is the entrance of the stock exhaust. As you can see by the pic below, the piping comes in and hugs the far left wall of the exhaust. I need the piping to be centered to do the Y idea. I am thinking I'm going to have to have a custom angle welded on the end to got it to center. Any ideas?

I know that the problem. I worried about the inlet setup. Everything that is grey is easily found and bought. I will be able to make that easy. Its just the inlet setup that is going to be hard to make.

Just weld a straight pipe all the way through and pack it in good....lol

if you use packing you will need away to get back in there because the packing will burn up in time. that's why I did my exhaust like this.

no packing tinny sound goes away when muffler gets warm

I think i will try that. I was thinking of having a simple way that I could just cut he welds again in a year or two when the packing goes bad, so I can repack it again and then just weld it back up. I was also thinking of just getting a stock xb12 muffler with the valve and permanantly opening the valve so it has more flow. Anyone have experience with keeping that valve open and the sound it makes? I tried searching to see what it sounds like, but I can't find it anywhere. I'm not looking for crazy loud exhaust. Just a bit louder and deeper then stock.

I gutted one, cut it on the two welds, removed the inside parts and brazed the thin metal back together. Can't hack it up on it but sounds louder then stock and not loud at all. Very similar to stock until 3000 RPM's and up. Then it sounds much better

atm3535 when I gutted my pipe I did away with the valve and welded the hole on top + I welded a half wall to give it a little back pressure. bike sounds great ( head turner ) sorry can't find my pics to show. having to repack exhaust sucks takes time away from riding. (just my to cents).

Ok rchuff, so you opened the exhaust near the valve and just took it out? Did that basically make it like keeping the valve open? What half wall? I'm trying to picture what you are saying? How does it sound? Would you mind doing a quick video?

atm 3535 go to youtube buell xb series muffler modification he uses a 9 muffler on valve .I used my 12 when I pulled it apart inside I cut the valve out and shortened the pipe in the muffler. then welded the hole in the shell that the valve shaft went threw.or you can make it so the valve is wide open. I got rid of it altogether. you have to gut out the middle after that I put a baffle in for some back pressure;it closes half the muffler off.
