I have an '89 Ford Mustang 5.0 with the original ECM. It's got a J3 chip on it and I reprogram it all the time since my car is heavily modified and supercharged. That puts the ECM at right around 30 years old and it's still fine. So is the wiring harness. So, not sure what that mechanic is saying, but electronics don't wear out at the same rate mechanicals do.
