How-To: Crank Case Breather Mod (with pics)

Buellxb Forum

Help Support Buellxb Forum:

ok I did the breather reroute on my XB12R, mostly finished, still got to put 2 steel hose clamps on the hose that goes to the front cylinders pcv valve, and wrap length wise with left over exhaust wrap (when i get done with wrapping my headers) the hose that is zip tied to the frame that goes over the rear cylinder rocker box cover in the first picture. other than that it is done. there is a 1 1/2 inch 5/16 hose(with a radiator drainplug petcock in the bottom of it, until i find something that looks & might work better may just leave it like that) attached to the bottom of my catch can. the filter is zip tied that much to keep it from vibrating & making any noise & to prevent it from geting dented or beat up. I wanted mine to be very unquie like the buell itself and most of it hidden except the catch can (for easy draining).

i dont think that any of bad gases coming out of the filter will be much of a problem, if any problem at all, where its at, I'll just check it periodically to make sure. i do the same any ways to make sure the battery terminals are corrosion free any ways.

Just did this mod to my bike yesterday and I love it!! I could feel constant power/feedback throughout all of the rpm ranges the whole ride. I just have to work on a better catch can lol [up]

Okay. I'm a reasonably skilled wrench. I'm also very deliberate when I do a project (read: slow) So, I really hate you people who did this in an hour!

But, it's back together, my jet6 catch can and filter are installed (and look the s**t). Unfortunately it's too late to take pix or do a test drive. More when I get that done.

One question: On an '07, what's the likelihood of needing a TPS reset?

Thx!

If you're asking whether it's needed after doing this mod...it's Not.

I was. Thanks!

BTW, if you're considering doing this mod and you've read this far, you've probably convinced yourself one way or the other. It isn't tough. Couple suggestions I haven't seen: When you're working with the airbox apart, I recommend you rubber band a bag or some plastic wrap over the intake horn. No matter what you drop down there, you don't want it down there. Also, because I was working around the oil cooler, I found it easier to remove the left side cooling scoop for access and seeing what I was doing. Overall, thanks to the original posters and to everyone who has added to the thread. [up]

I just did it, I did not use a breather. I let my Xb9 idle for 15 min and there was a good size piddle of water. Bike idles and runs much smoother at low RPM's

I did this along with dropping in a K & N Airfilter. The check engine light has been on ever since. My question is, do I need to get the TPS reset or have the dealer turn off the check engine light?

Has anyone found a filter that is all black, including the filter element?

I have done this mod, but I have no filter or catch can. I plan to change that this spring.

BikerTrash,
check out page 6 of this thread, half way down you'll find a post by Jet6
I think it might be what up your alley...
he makes sick little catch can/filtre setups[up]
:)

Finally got around to doing this. Would have been quick and simple but I kept changing my mind about routing and catch cans. Then I would forget to put a hose clamp on and my vacuum-tees fit in the hose like freaking super glue. Good thing I bought 6 feet of hose I had enough to try a billion different ways. I have the cheap energy shot bottle on for now until I have more funds.

It's a beeotch to get hoses off of barbed fittings when the hose is new. Once you start getting oil vapors through, the hose seems to swell some, plus the condensed spooge makes it much easier, which is why I used clamps. I used fuel injection clamps, because they clamp more evenly and cost about the same.

Does anyone have the part # for the black plastic nipple breather piece that comes out of the rear cylinder head?

This is out of an '03 Parts manual, but they should be able to cross-reference for you if it's not the updated part number. I'm assuming you're talking about the following:

(#16) 17606-00Y - GROMMET
(#17) 17607-00Y - PCV VALVE

I finally got the guts to do it. Here's the semi-final result. I need to redo my drain line (ran out of hose clamps).

I'm also going to paint the filter chrome pieces black

Hell yes zippy ties! those things have earned a place in my tool box right next to the gorilla tape and super glue

pockets, in the second pic, what is the breath tube that curls up and over the top of the frame where the seat and airbox cover meet? Or anyone else? It's off subject here but i just noticed mine is crimped a little and want to know if its starving anything for air
