How-To: Crank Case Breather Mod (with pics)

Buellxb Forum

Help Support Buellxb Forum:

unbelievably I went to advanced auto parts, pep boys, and walmart. none of the above could provide me with a small air filter, or compressor catch can. i only managed to buy two foot of tubing two 't' or three way fittings. oh and some discounted seafoam. hitting up the freight in the morning, maybe they'll have something.

That is ridiculous our auto parts stores here have them all over, along with stickers, 50 billion neons and plasti-chrome accents. I hear they also carry useful things too but I think its behind the other junk.

Nah on a serious note that sucks man have you looked online to see if any where will ship to store for free?

I'm sure this has been answered somewhere earlier in the thread but I'm hoping to get a quick and concise response:

What is the benefit of this mod? So oil vapor from your crankcase doesn't get sucked into your intake? I guess that sounds like a reasonable thing to try to avoid, but is there any appreciable performance benefit?

...and oily spray residue. No appreciable performance increase, just good clean air for your engine and helps with crappy lower RPM intake coughs & stutters.

i havent checked online yet, i'm gonna look over the thread again for pictures of the filter, i'm going to use a small medicine bottle for the catch can. If anyone has any SKU/PART/SERIAL number for the filter post them or message them to me if you can and where you bought them. Thanks.

benefits of the mod. only allowing clean air onto the intake to be mixed with fuel and be burned. results: i havent found them yhet still in process, but if for some reason you think burning condensed moisture[water] and motor oil mix is a good thing, leave it as is.

wonder who thought of that concept
[sarcasm, just in case....]

Found mine at my local Advance Auto Parts store: Advance Auto - Crankcase breather

Did this mod today on my 09 SS w/ 650 miles, except I tee'd the 2 lines together and ran a straight vent all the way back behind my left foot peg and zip tied it to the extended fuel vent. No filter or catch can. Saw the oil on the bottom of the filter too.

This should be the first mod on anyones list. No more sputtering and I used to have to feather the clutch until 15 MPH or it would stall. Now I can coast at 9 MPH without stalling. [up]

And screw what the dealer will say. They don't know what they're doing anyways. It took them an hour to try and install a new battery strap and they broke that too. They didn't even put the fuse cover on right - it was backwards just lying on top.

The filter is blowing splooge all over my rear swing arm. Anyone have any suggestions? Is this normal? Thank you in advance.

If it's blowing out your filter, you've got something plugging the drain end or the routing is bad.

got this badboy in the mail Friday, going to install it tonight. $50, pretty good deal. Very good quality aluminum/brass fittings. Not sure how to mount it yet, but ill get some pics up as soon as i do.

came with a little sticker "We don't care how they do it in Japan-Buell Motorcycle co."

I have the filter installed on the t-connector; then about ten inches of hose and a threaded cap. I was thinking the ten inches of hose would serve as the catch can, but I have been checking it every 100 miles and nothing is coming out. The filter, however, is leaking splooge on the rear swing arm...

You should have some drippage at the end of the hose, especially after a good ride. I have a similar setup to yours but with a small length of hose from the air filter to the T, with end zip tied upstream & above the end of the drain hose.

without some small or long hose from the "T" connector to the filter. the oil is just going to drain down and some of it into the filter, if the filter is connected directly to the "T" .
the filter would be best if is above the "T" connector at least a couple of inches or more. think of how liquids flow and get sloshed around ,if the filter is above the "T" the oil wont flow uphill without enough pressure . think someone has a diagram of that or like that somewhere in this thread.

I have the exact same setup as "Pockets" and "7Mary3" on Page 10 of this thread, except I put a threaded cap on the end of the hose...

Ryan954- Can you post up a pic of the end? I've been trying to find something like that instead of a petcock.
