How-To: Crank Case Breather Mod (with pics)

Here is my idea. No splooge blow by through those fancy little colorful filters. I used a inclosed fram fuel filter part number G3. No need for a catch can, it's all in one. I installed a tee about 1 inch above the filter to vent overboard behind my foot brake pedal. All total $5 for my mod...

I put mine on the left above the swing arm, I also have a petcock type drain on the low point, I used a tee on front and routed the drain line along the inside of the oil cooler.

I will be doing the reroute this weekend. I really appreciate all the great info here. Thanks.

greenemac2003: I think you're going to find that the vent hose will actually act as a drain hose, and the splooge is going to end up on that side of the bike or your foot.

Well here's crankcase catchcan set up. I did not like the look of the breather visible and was not sure how it would do getting wet when washing. The only thing im missing right now is the petcock drain. I just got one 1/4 universal it was too large to fit the 3/8 hose.

sidefx, you're going to regret that entire setup. The filter will have to be replaced or cleaned periodically, and the hose is going to get oil all over the left side of the bike.

the filter is actually angled up so oil should not make it up to the filter... and i said i have a petcock just the wrong size, no oil on the bike what so ever.

Ok, I didn't see the petcock, but I still think that filter is going to be a mess. Oil doesn't flow up the tube. It's basically an oil vapor carried up and out by the air. It's not looking for the lowest spot in the hose, it's looking for a way out. I guess only time will tell.

I got a plastic petcock from Lowes plumming dept. sanded down just a little so it would fit inside the 3/8" hose. Less than $5 and it works.

i got the right size petcock now its a 1/8" universal brass from O'Reillys $2.79. The threads are just larger than the 3/8" hose you can thread it up in there for a snug fit!

in case any of u are interested, the zx12r comes with a really nice breather set up. it even has a small clear catch can incorporated into it with a plug to drain it. here are the part numbers for the breather

fitting 92005-1365
clamp 92170-1529 x3
tube 92191-1517
breather 14069-1051
cap 11065-1088

like i said, the breather is clear and its as long as your thumb and about twice the diameter so u can see when its starting to fill and empty it accordingly, very small and compact and easy to hide

How often or how much fluid are u guys getting in your catch can?

I did mine a little over a month ago, popped it off the other day and nothing.

i think it depends alot on climate. i live in Denver..very low humidity, ridden about 500 miles so far and not a drop in the can. Runs damn good tho. I <3 My XB

I'm in Virginia beach, heat index today was 104 and humid as hell.. Of course I still grilled out and had a few brewskies. [cool]

probobly only have around 200 miles on the can and nothing, but
the air filter and box are pretty clean so it must be working.

give me something to do over winter

WINTER? WTF? [confused]

I hope you're in Australia, 'cause otherwise there's absolutely no reason to wait.

Finally done mine today. I have my filter hid away behind the swingarm. So far I can definately see an improvement. The low end stutting is all but gone.
