How-To: Crank Case Breather Mod (with pics)

^^Hahaha, I did mine yesterday EXACTLY how you did yours, and I only used 2ft of hose.

Wish I would've known before I spend $20 on 5 foot of hose. Oh well, I'll hang onto it for another project. I took the bike for a ride. I'll say I noticed a small difference. It definitely didn't jerk around like it used to below 2k rpm in 1st gear, but it definitely wasn't a night and day difference like other people have noticed. Either way not bad for an hours worth of work.

Hey,where did your photos for the mod go,I am going to be doing this in a few days, plus where did you all get the filters from, all the parts places I deal with do not have that style, thanks.

Hi all, im new to this forum and looks great so far, I did this mod last week, At the moment i have the two hoses at the top connected to one which leads straight down to a small filter which hangs upside down behind the chin spoiler. Is this ok?I have skimmed over this thread for the answer but no luck. Any help would be great.

are the benefits really that noticeable? I've been told that this is something that only older bikes need.

and that for our new bike we shouldn't be getting any sludgy gunk coming out unless there is something seriously wrong with our engines...

badxb I wouldn't have the filter upside down as all the oil will collect inside of it. It will still work just fine without negative side effects except for having to replace the filter more often. Drogen I'm not sure what you consider to be old or new bikes but my '06 had very noticeable results.

Thanks dallas, i thought that might happen but i installed it according to ASB intructions. Maybe i read it wrong. (i hate intructions) I will alter now. Dragen, i noticed a difference on my 04, not huge but noticeable.

I have a 2007 XB12SS, does anyone else have same year with this mod that have noticed a difference?

Does anyone have a detailed diagram on how to do this and what parts are required?

Does this need a ecm mapping or reset or tps reset/adjustment?

Drogen if you scroll through this thread there are alot of pictures of how people have ran theirs in the past. You do not need to do a tps reset or adjust the ecm for this mod. However I did a reset just for good measures. If you need more detailed pictures PM me with your email address and I will send them to you.

This might be a stupid question but where you have the T piece for the external filter to attach to before the drain valve instead of running an external filter could you add some extra hose and redirect it back to one of the two holes in the bottom of the engine filter box?

Or is doing this defeating the whole purpose of the mod?

Wouldn't see why not. I've done the re-route on two different bikes and havnt gotten any fluid.
If it really did fill up with fluid then it wouldn't be ok.
It wouldn't make sense to me b/c the whole idea of the re-route is to get the recyclyed dirty fluid out of the carb.
IMO it's more of an astetics thing and I think the little airfilter turns heads.

Yeah, that would be defeating the purpose. You want the water vapor and emulsified oil out of the intake system. Even with the filter, you are going to send part of the smutch back to the intake. Also, in my semi-scientific opinion, one of the benefits of the reroute is to create steady pressure in the airbox (rather than corrupted by the pulses from the crankcase), which lets the ECM smooth the fueling. Just MHO.

I have an 07 firebolt and was looking to do the breather re route. But when i got the airbox cover off i noticed i was missing the black piece on top. There are to cables coming off this piece, one is an electrical connecter the other looks like some type of throttle cable. Can someone tell me what the part is im missing and if i can still do the breater re route if its misssing. Please thank you

is it a xb12? It sounds like your describing the butterfly valve and exhaust servo.
As far as I know they don't effect the breather re-route at all.

I did my XB12Ss a while ago. While I didn't notice a huge performance increase. The low speed stumble is all but gone. Every now and then I get an unexpected stumble but no where near what it used to be like. Well worth the few dollars and bit of time in my opinion.
