How to/DIY: XB stator replacement

Buellxb Forum

Help Support Buellxb Forum:

I would recommend replacing the grommet.
However, if it's a high temp non-hardening RTV I think you might save yourself a little dough and time.
When I removed my stator wiring and grommet I used a pair of pliers(with some tape on the ends for protection) and a very wide BLUNT screwdriver(with a layer of tape on the end) wedged under the grommet to carefully pull and pry on the grommet until it popped out.
It might be eaisier for you to remove if you take apart the connector(make sure you label those pins!) and pull the wiring through. That would give the inner diameter of the grommet more room the flex and what not. But I'd only do that if you're not able to get it loose with the method I just mentioned.
If you don't like the methods I mentioned check your local AutoParts store for no-mar trim pulling tools. They usually carry Some that look like a pry bar with a plastic coated dove tail on the end.
Just some suggestions.
Good luck

Thank you for the suggestions. It looks like the stator grommet is overmolded piece of rubber on the wires, so it is not replaceable from the stator, and it is impossible to pull the wires through the grommet. I am working on 2009 Buell XB 12 Scg, maybe old models have different stator grommet?

Hey you're right about the grommet. I don't think you can remove it from the wiring. Don't know what effing grommet I was thinking of. My bad.
Sorry if I misled you or anyone else reading this.

Actually the orientation of the stator wires doesn't matter, as long as the same 3 pins are occupied in the connector so that it properly connects to the VR. That's why all 3 wires are the same color.

Really?????? Sounds like what I said. Just worded different. As I said before my 07 has color matching wires from one connector to the other. So if they orient the same space... ...they connect to the same colored wires.
But my bike might be an anomaly. What do I know.
And as I stated earlier. I was wrong on being able to replace the grommet. What I was talking about was in reference to taking apart the stators electrical connector on an 07 buell xb 12r.
Im obviously not versed on an 09.

Sorry, maybe I misunderstood what you said. I meant as long as you occupy the same three holes in the connector, it doesn't matter which wire in is which hole. They are all hot, with the ground coming from the cases. I should clarify though that is only the case with 03-07 3 phase. 08-10 is single phase, which has only 2 wires, and those cannot be swapped.

Today I've removed the starter and figured out that the starter gasket can leak too, there is a lot of oil under the gasket is the lower starter screw cavity and on the starter bottom.

Another issue is the 2009 Buell XB starter gasket part number is 31488-81C H-D, I bought a starter gasket from http://americansportbike.com/newdir/Item/5934 and it looks and feels different. The original 31488-81C H-D gasket feels like rubbered piece of metal, and it has seal around the main hole. The americansportbike gasket has different material, it looks like inspection cover gasket material (aluminum sheet covered by plastic) and the main hole is bigger and has no seal around the starter clutch. So the question is which one is better?

Here is the mess under the starter

The rear cylinder PCV valve does not leak. It looks like the rear cylinder base gasket does not leak too.

I coat all my gaskets in a non hardening gasket sealer. I know it's not always recommended but I haven't had a single gasket leak since I've started treating them.
To answer you original question I don't know which is better. I trust Al. I'm sure if you email him, with some pics, he'll have an good answer and recoemdation for ya.

I emailed to americansporbike. But anyway I've already installed the new gasket so I hope it will work. In addition I applied black RTV silicone on the stator grommet.

Here is the process:

Remove the stator grommet using flat screwdriver covered by a few layers of tape. Use the screwdriver like lever resting it on the primary wall. The grommet comes out very easy this way.

Clean the grommet and all holes and the starter place using brake cleaner. Cover the stator before cleaning because the brake cleaner can dilute the stator coils wires clear coat.

Apply black RTV silicone on the grommet and reinstall it.

The starter gasket from americansportbike has bigger hole so it is not going to stay on the starter while installation, so use some tape to temporary fix the gasket while starter installation.
