i got laid off from my profession(land surveying) over 2 yrs ago and it has been dead ever since. did the training for a new career and that profession seems to have died out as well(welding), not that i feel i was any good at it. so i was just curious if anybody actually sees any hiring out there and where and for what. or even if your in a profession that never seen a downsize.

i am a recent college graduate and am currently employed as a mechanical engineer. I have seen a lot more activity at the career fairs at the school I went to. I know people getting several interviews and offers. Whereas a year or two ago it was hard to even get one interview. This doesnt really give you a good direction to go but in my eyes it seems like things are starting to get better.

I am graduating this spring for Architectural Engineering-Construction Management. I know for sure that, the construction industry is picking up, especially around the DC area.

I just had my second interview with Gilbane, a huge Construction Managing company, and should know whether I have a job by new years.

Multiple Construction Managing companies are looking to hire alot more from our career fair this year than last year.

around here (Michigan) things are still getting worse for most of us.
my friend with engineering degrees spent nearly 2 years just trying to get an internship to finish his second degree and still cant find work in any industry related to his field of study, he is currently managing a greenhouse part time.

since I got laid off I haven't really found any work in my industry so I went back to school to train in a new field (EMS) and hopefully I can do ok when I graduate.

im an auto tech and business is back to where it was 2 years ago.shops and dealers are always hiring GOOD ase certified techs.wyotech is the best school ive worked with uti grads and they all sucked.if your good so is the money my worst year in 20 years was around 48k most of the time im over 100k.

with Goverments being nothing more then boards of directors for the corporations that hired them in the first place, the goverment debts are spiraling outa control and more money then ever being spent on the industrial/military complex (lotsa jobs there) I feel as if the situations of many countries are in ecomomic peril.

just my .02 (with the economy tho its more like .01)
just some info for those interested

I was laid off last year for about 6 weeks ang got called back. We have had manadatory ot ever since infact the company has been hiring. When I hear stories like your I try to remember to be happy that I am working a lot instead of not at all. Good luck to all of you. I'm in upstate NY by the pa border.

We are slammed with work, Im working 60+ hrs a week and they canceled our winter shutdown due to our heavy backlog. Our build slots are filled threw April and we have hired 60 people in the last 3 months. Two years ago we had 180 employees then it dropped all the way down to 26 at one point. We are back up to 120 employees total now. My buddies Mobile welding business is so booked with work he has to turn down business just because he cant fit it in. Its defiantly doing a lot better.

I work for the government, USDA and live in central Florida. The economy shows no real signs of picking up around here. There are still lots of for sale signs on houses and a lot of businesses going "tits up".

Here in D/FW i don't see signs of an improving economy , Lots of for sale signs in my neighborhood, wifes company (at&t) laid off 45 people last week , the company i used to work for laid off 3 people last week ( bulk food delivery ). That's just what i see around me , but there just seems to be a negative vibe when i here about my local economy. A few of the restaraunts i frequent have closed shops also .[sad]

West Michigan is all about Aerospace around me. I have seen so many jobs fall by the way side but my company is booming. Also anything inthe medical field is good.

Like Delta One said MI has been hit hard all over but some places have been growing throughout the downfall, I am one of the lucky ones along with BuellChick who have not had to worry at all about these issues.

No matter where you are medical is probably on the top of the list for secure jobs. Also down in the southern states Teaching is in high demand as well.

I work for an marketing/advertising/social media company and it's mixed. Our bigger clients keep sending us more work while we've lost about half of our "small" accounts due to closure.

im pushin 40 and deaf in one ear so the military is out for me. i spent yrs of night school fro my land surveying degree and spent 2 yrs on the welding diploma, im in ga and there isnt any work to be found that pays above minimum wage around here adn they seem to only want high school kids and retired folks. lol i went from making 75 a year to unemployment and its gone now. thank goodness i had some savings to leech off of up till now. so from the posts i see its lookin like i may be lookin to move come spring just to get a check. it is refreshing to hear some folks are doing good.
well if anyone is interested in a resume from me id be happy to send one lol.

hey X is your company still hiring?
I was an avionics specialist in the Air Force, maybe I could land some work while I get my Medic *crosses fingers*

ive seen shadetree mechanics/hobbyist come in and make 35k a year if thats an option for you.amarillo is booming as far as construction also a lot of land changing hands with the whole wind power thing.maybe alot of work for a surveyor

Where in Georgia. I live in Dalton (Northwest Georgia) and many of the plants around are hiring maintenance mechanics. Most around here think that if you can weld you are a good maintenance mechanic.

good to see some are still making it , do what you can to keep it, it sucks being unemployed and constantly looking for job.
I was laid off from my Aircraft mechanics job at the end of 08 and was out of work & looking for a job for 1year and 4months then finally got hired for insurance agent but that didnt work out, no one can afford anything new , i was spending way too much to find clients, it got to be where i was making no money at that as it was pure commission, had to get out of that after 6months, now I'm back to looking for work with not much hope in sight, where i live the county and all the surrounding counties have the highest unemployment rates in my state not much hiring unless you have 3-5+yrs experience or special degree, and the very few minimum wage jobs can be and are picky about who they hire and they also want people with lots of experience and only offer 15-20hours a week not to mention the hundreds of people competing for the same job , but i'm still looking and trying for a job ,talking to everyone i know or have worked for,... cant move, mortgage,
