Well , at this point sealant /tape is not important at all ,
IMO, I would open things up take a look find out were the the slivers came from, if a new clutch was installed a few K miles ago ??? What brand ?
On a bike with 15 k there should only be a fro on the magnet, but since new parts were put in might be the culprit,
open it up take some good pics for us to learn from.
 
I bought 9307 - XB Series Clutch Plate kit from americansportbike. The friction pads looked different than friction pads from original clutch plates, but the kit fits the basket.

Might be west from having new components, but we can all guess all day.....


Since you posted the question, the only way to get the answer is to remove the primary cover, and inspect everything. I'd pull apart the clutch pack as well, Lunatic is probably right (as usual) that the ears are worn. That would explain the "loud" shifting.
