I was out riding yesterday. I was coming out of a pretty gentle corner and all of a sudden I notice this big german shepard running full speed towards the street taking the angle to meet me. It was a split second decision and i opened it up and barely made it past the dog. Anyone have any experiences like this. I feel like your best bet would be to try and hit them square and hope for the best. All this while the owner sat in a chair in his front yard watching his kids on a swing set and didnt do a damn thing to stop his dog.

Thats crazy. I just took the MSF course and one of the points you study and that is also on the test is what to do when a dog comes at ya. They say you shouldnt kick it, which I thing sounds like a fitting thing to do, but that you should slow then speed up to throw the dogs timing off. Glad you made it out ok.

now that you mention it i vaguely remember that from the msf, however if i slowed at all im sure it would have ended differently.

My dad hit a german shepard on a 47 Indian. Turned that thing into a speed bump quick. Darwin's theory effects all living things.

He also used to say "When in doubt, power out"

I had a dog do that same thing to me when I was younger and had a paper route,

differences was my moped had no get up and go to do anything and the dog was to close for me to react. So basically the dog ran right into the side of my moped, stopped yelped and whimpered back to its house:D

Sorta on the same subject, if you ever see a cat go screaming accross the road watch out, there's usually another one right behind it on the chase. Scared the hell out of me. :D Wayne

no, but when ur running open headers and throttle it while ur passing livestock (horses, cows) they usually jump and scatter real quick :D

yea, you should always watch the dog as you slow down then when gets within a couple of feet, pin it, works everytime. You should have learned this when you got you MC license.

i had a mates mean arse dog chase me everytime i went to his house on my mini bike when we were young. It used to run in front biting the tyre and i ended up stacking it twice.I grew and got a RM125 which had larger wheels that fucked the dog's pattern up eventually i ran the bastard over ,jumping off its back.It was ok but never bothered me again.Thank fuck i left his gate open that day.

Neighbors down the street have a datsun or some little weiner dog, anyhow, last year it used to always come barking out of of its yard(no fence, no chain), couple close calls. Finally I was having no more of it and decided he was getting the boot next time. Sure enough later that week he came flying out at me, I sent him flying in between a garbage can and a parked car and he hasn't bothered me since.

gah I recently moved in to what most consider a upper end neighborhood and one of the neighbors dogs tries to intercept me on a daily basis... It looks like a rat terrier or something I'm just waiting for the day it meets the tire

Welcome to a cycllist's world. Try getting away from one on a bicycle. On the motorcycle, my best results have been to confuse them. Slow, then accelerate, blow the horn, whistle, holler. Don't stop; some will keep coming.

+1 on MSF. Slow down, then accelerate as the dog closes in. If it darts in front of you, run over it. The instructors words were "you'll be surprised how big a dog you can run over without crashing".

that's why installed heat seaking missles on the front of my bike. "Target aquired. fire... fire... fire"

I didnt really have that much time to slow down to be honest, I was already going 50 when I saw the dog. If I slowed down Im pretty sure he would have got me or been run over. But if I had more time and road between me and the dog I probably would have slowed down first. I wasnt speeding through a crowded neighborhood either, its pretty desolate here and the speed limits are 55. He had a big yard up on a hill and it was right after a corner. He was coming toward the road before I even saw him. Its a good thing I downshift for the corners..it helped to be up in the rpm range a little.

and BAAL I have outran a dog on my mountain bike before and it sucked.

midnight-that reminds me of the video i saw of the guy who actually put rockets on his bike. That would be hilarious to shoot one at a dog running out at you.

I tried to outrun a dog on my skateboard... Did Not Work!! Luckily it was a nice dog and only wanted to play :) I have yet to be chased on a bike. (It'll happen soon just cuz I said that..)

your daughter come to my house today and she kick my dog! Now my dog need operation!

but on a serious note.. last year one of the only buellers I know in my town totalled out his 09 xb12r when he ran over a cat going around a corner at 65ish..

Damn animals!
