A utility knife wouldn't work because the foam is 2 inches thick. I tried a pocketknife, and a steak knife, but the foam was a lot of work to cut through with those. The circular saw was handy, and probably easier than using a sawsall.

Try using a guitar string or piano wire kinda like a saw.
