So the weather is getting colder here in Michigan and when I bought my bike last summer it came with a trickle charger. When if ever should I use this? When the weather gets cold I will be moving it from a heated garage that occasionally drops in temp (when both doors are open) to a heated basement where it will be 65 all winter. Should I keep it hooked up the whole time it is in the basement? How should I use this or is it worth it? I think the battery (which works fine now) is original and the bike is an 04 lightning. Thanks for the help for such a simple question. My 1st bike obviously.

Whenever it is going to set for a few weeks or longer put it on the charger. It will just maintain the batteries charge and the battery will last alot longer. It will not hurt the battery if you use it all the time.

Drain all the gas; disconnect battery; keep battery hooked up to trickle; store on a roller-jack if possible; or put piece of wood under kick-stand; cover for next season...:p

ooo thanks guys :) would like to think I would have remembered to do some of that myself but thank you for the reminder. Should not give myself that much credit. Anything else for storage? Just change oil and gas her up in the summer right? I need a new rear tire, think I will get that this winter (original rear tire from 2003/2004). The tire now has 3k miles on it and is looking bald. I assume because of age more than use.

something to think about is that you have a five year old battery. To play it safe I replace after that.It sucks getting stuck somewhere....

30 august and the weather is getting colder?!? Ouch. Get some good cold weather gear and ride as long as you can.

Hold off on the tire change until near the end of the off season, so your new tire(s) won't sit with load on them over a whole winter.

A Battery Tender Junior charger like mine turns itself off when no longer needed, so always having it hooked up poses no prob's. I alternate between two bikes in winter, because I don't shut down for the season - like to get out on those nice winter days and keep the bike going. But I'm not in MI.
