Former Race Buells hiding under tarps?

Buellxb Forum

Help Support Buellxb Forum:

Fairings are ok, the bike just had to ship with traditional handlebars. (And not be converted to clipons/clubmans/etc when setup for Hooligans.) So Firebolts are out, Lightnings, Ulys, etc are in. That particular machine was on my radar but I didn't chase hard as it's an Scg, aka lowered, the polar opposite of what I need at the track, and I don't know how difficult it is to 'un factory lower' them? The idea of a 'package' deal with a Uly was also enticing, but ultimately I found the 08 Uly I'm working with now and opted to go with the last generation Buell motor with all the improvements instead.

Mother trucker... fuel pump out, rebuilt, low fuel light works, cool, just gotta put it back in. Well... I was able to get it out without undoing the swingarm pivot, but I don't see it going back so I'll just do that last step right? Swingarm pivot pinch bolt... seized up solid.

Brute force: Took the swingarm pivot out anyways, that got me enough force off the pinch bolt to get it out. Now to find a replacement.

Clearly I ****ed something up, won't start. I can hear the pump, sounds like it's making pressure... no fire. IIRC XBs didn't get a fuel pressure sensor till 2010? If so, log isn't going to help me there. Guess I have to drain it and rip it down again, bah.

Follow up - Pulled the pump, there was pressure in the line, went back to the old regulator thinking it was either bypassing, wrong pressure, etc... still no joy. I'm throwing in the towel for tonight, I've got no way to verify pressure, but I do know it'd start up fine before so, clearly I've messed something up.

It's too late but removing the lower shock bolt allows the swingarm to extend long enough to get the pump out:/ dang wish I could have saved you the trouble...

Because the cold start on a Buell is SO long and SO rich, they foul plugs easily. On '08-up Buells, there is a remote 'spark plug cleaning procedure' that fires the coils. Or better, pull and clean the plugs. Maybe they're just fouled from repeated cold starts?

Lower shock bolt was already out, the aftermarket regulator is taller than OEM, so needed more room behind the pump to get it to shove back in there and it just wasn't happening with only the shock disconnected.

I'll pull plugs and give them a look, saw I can fire them with ECMDroid too but I want to poke at other things under the airbox lid anyways. At some point I'm going to need to plumb an oil catch can so seeing what I'm dealing with there will help too. This is a good excuse to clean the injectors I guess.

Fun side note, OEM pump is labeled as a Walbro, intake side is different on Rev Moto's kit though, so you can't directly swap intake socks.

That sucks, but glad you got it done.

Ya, I've done so, so, so, many fuel pumps and only ever seen Walbro branded pumps in them like yours, but getting some conflicting info lately. We'll see if they elaborate.

I've found on my bikes the spark plug cleaning feature is triggered when turning the ignition on, and a funny (shut UP A-aron!) story, but if it's not doing it automatically, hold the throttle wide open, run switch on, turn on the key on. That should do it. Even easier than ECMDroid!

If you pull the injectors, you'll see a boss on the TB casting that you can tap 1/8"NPT for a shrader valve fitting, to use as a test port for a pressure gauge that is super handy. I did a thread about it, but thats all it is.

Catch can is simple. Theres only the 2 plastic valves on the valve covers the go into the bottom of the air box. tee them together, and down to the can. Theres another breather between the jugs. Even racing there shouldn't be enough blow-by to need draining if the motors in good shape. I've found them to be pretty well made.

She lives! New (ok, OLD) pump, builds and holds pressure and fired right up no effort. Now to put it all back together, test ride tomorrow and hopefully be confident enough to register for a track day this weekend. Then comes the mad scramble to race prep.

Confirmed, 30mil test ride and she's happy to romp. No check engine lights, no odd behavior, just key on and rip. Now to spend money like a drunken sailor.

Front brake is still pulsy as hell, but better than before now that it's all been cleaned, EPFA pads and no springs so fully floating. Lever no longer goes through 3/4 of it's travel as it does it's thing. Will see how it fares at a track day, going to be sourcing a new rotor ASAP.

She's a beauty! Can't wait to see her in full race dress! Also, can't wait to hear about your races.

Also, because I never do things half way, I've got what I believe is a 98 S1W that was actively raced back in the day that I'm helping revive for a friend. Dropped a valve on track due to a missed shift, got torn down to diag, then torn further down, some parts have wandered and ended up on other bikes, but the bulk of the machine should be there. First step is going to be deciding what build to go with on the motor, and that a lot depends on how much fun I have on the Uly. If I really like the Uly on track it gets the mad science motor and the S1W gets made safe and reliable. If I want the Uly back as a street bike, science happens on the S1W. More of it should be arriving in my garage in a couple weeks.

Meanwhile, waiting on confirmation for a track day reg for Saturday so I can lock in a hotel... possibly some last minute wrenching Friday night...

Classic! No, never go halfway. Thanks for showing more pictures. Looking forward to your track weekend. Good luck getting it all set up.
