Wow...this is really looking like the issue is (at least mostly) an issue with the rear grommet on the PCV. I got the new plugs gapped and installed, and the wires. I also loosened up the 8 bolts on the rocker covers (which were tough just like some of the other bolts were on this bike. You know the type...when they FINALLY let loose, there's a loud "snap" and a small wisp of white smoke. With how locked in some of these bolts were, a part of me wants to use anti-sieze on them when I reinstall them, but knowing common thought is to loctite everything. Here's the tops of both rocker covers:

The front one:

The rear one:

PS - While I'm thinking this is a big job, my riding buddy texted me these picture of one of his bikes that he's working on. Hahaha. All of this had to come apart just to replace a spring that resets the shift lever. Crazy. He's a guy that works on everything himself. It's probably how he can afford to have 10 bikes or whatever he's up to now.

Cross your fingers and pray that you never have a transmission issue with your Buell!
You'll have to split the cases, which require an entire engine tear down, to repair a transmission on an xb!

Webbie, Sure the pvc grommet is bad, but that is not your main issue, Your rockers are causing the main oil mess. rest assured.

OK....I trust you! I should have the gasket kit tomorrow. I'm taking tomorrow off to take a nice ride (about 300 miles) with a couple friends from work. I may take Friday off too and try to get the Buell back in shape.

After I take the rocker covers off (those 4 allen bolts), what is required to get to the rocker box gaskets?

Warner

Once you remove the rocker top with the 4 bolts the both inner and outer gasket is immediately in sight and can be removed. Make sure you get that rocker top and cleaned up and pretty and try and clean as much gunk off of the rear fins, fan area as possible. You want to clean as much of the oil, oil drip spots you can so it’s easier to check for a leak after the install. I know with mine I had some build up I couldn’t get to and it will dribble Off eventually, and possibly make you think it’s still leaking haha. You got 7 pages here so I’m sure it’s been brought up, but use a good sealant for your gasket. I used permatex high tack gasket sealant on the gasket and all the way around contact areas on bottom of the cover.

Thank you sir! So just those 4 bolts gets me access to both the rocker box and rocker cover gaskets? I did buy the Permatex sealant that Silverrider recommended. Not EXACTLY sure how to apply it, honestly....super thin coating? Some suggest not using any of that. I plan on cleaning those covers a LOT before I even remove the bolts.....I just STARTED loosening them to make sure that I wasn't going to run into issues with them.

ABEFAE3B-D4F4-4847-8F4F-2B479E54BD89.jpg did or have you ever checked for leaks on your intake seals? Perfect time to replace them and cleaning your TB if you haven’t lol a lot easier with the motor down

It’s pretty straight forward on applying. Cool thing about this is it has the brush under the top when you unscrew it. I applied it liberally lol. Once you put a coat down you can tell this stuff will REALLY HELP prevent leaks.

No, I didn't check....sounds like another "while you're in there" thing. Hahaha. Those suckers are starting to add up! Haha. Wasn't planning on messing with that, nor do I know how to clean the throttle body or injectors....

So the one that you are calling the "outer" is really the rocker cover gasket, right? And the "inner" is the intake gasket, yes?

What I'm asking about is the Rocker Box gasket (vs the Rocker Cover gasket).

Thanks again,

Warner

yes the outer is the "rocker gasket", but it also has a "inner" one. The intake gasket/seals are on the two ends of the throttle body (my second pic), and yes it is a separate job haha, not too bad though. If you didnt notice issues dont bother.

in the diagram below, you are replacing the gaskets/grommet/breather. # 1, 2, 9 & 10

Thanks. Yeah, I know what the intake gaskets are...and I'm not having an issue so not messing iwth them. What I was asking about was the rocker cover gaskets vs the rocker box gaskets. I heard both being mentioned and wasn't sure what the difference was. I have heard that "inner" one called an intake gasket as well (different than the circular ones on the throttle body tubes). I just want to make sure that I have the terminology down correctly.....and apparently I DON'T yet.

Thanks again,

Warner

haha you may dude, as i dont know the correct terminology either haha. I believe you are correct though in the inner one being a intake though.. physcially makes sense LOL.

Yeah, I'm just wondering what the difference is between the "Rocker COVER gasket" (this is the outer one, I believe) and the "Rocker BOX gasket".....that's the one I'm not sure of it's location.

Webbie, Just trying to make it simple for you . as you take it apart ,just put it back together the same way, but with new gaskets and RTV, bata bing bata boom

Haha. Ok....simple question...do I need to remove MORE that just the 4 bolts holding the rocker cover on in order to replace all the necessary gaskets?

Thanks,

Warner
