Haha. Ok....simple question...do I need to remove MORE that just the 4 bolts holding the rocker cover on in order to replace all the necessary gaskets?

Thanks,

Warner

tokinbuller, gave you the image above, to look at spells it out .

You do not. those 4 are all that is necessary to remove the top, clean, and replace everything for your job.

Thanks. The confusion came from the different terminology that has been thrown around in this thread. I heard the term rocker BOX gasket, and separately about a rocker COVER gasket. I believe what the person who mentioned the rocker BOX gasket was referring to was actually the INNER gasket.

OK....made a lot of progress tonight. I got the new gaskets installed, got my engine rotated back up and started hooking everything back up. I have one snag in that I can't find the other end of the head temp sensor to plug it in! I'm not sure where the other end (that's not going to the top of the rear cylinder) is supposed to be, but I can't find it.

I still have to put the muffler back on...kind of want to get all of the rust off of it and hit it with some high temp paint before I put it back on. Then it's just a matter of getting the belt and tensioner situated, tighten up the axle, put the airbox back together, install battery and seat. Hopefully I got everything back how it should be. That was a pretty big job. I did use the black permatex when I put everything back together.

Attached are some photos with captions:

Rear rocker gasket showing lots of burning - mostly on the one side, but pretty significant.

Kenny , When the rear rocker only getting second hand hot air from the front, long red lights etc....... hitting higher temps than the front the gaskets get hot spots and the leaks begin. This why so many of us add on a RSS to help out.

Not trying to jump this thread but I feel this is relevant--I purchased my '09 Uly(14,000 miles) almost 2 years ago, it always ran hot and the fan came on in traffic and stuff a lot, even on cool days. Shortly after acquiring the Uly I installed a Drummer SS exhaust system and the appropriate ECM.

Aside from the power increase and extra noise it was pretty obvious that the bike ran massively cooler. The fan hardly ever comes on even in traffic. I spoke to Kevin D. about that and he assured me that is how things are.

I guess the enhanced exhaust flow/lack of back pressure helps the bike run cooler. Makes sense to me. I have put over 6000 miles on the bike since the Drummer, install, in all kinds of conditions, so I am pretty sure that all is well.

just sayin--and I hope I never have to change out a head gasket:) .

You are some what correct, with the mods you did help it run cooler running, From the factory to keep the smog/EPA people happy your ECM fuel map is set up Lean which equals heat,
With your mods especially the richer fuel map to support the (Drummer by the way nice pipe) ex pipe, You have happier cooler engine you have created.
And the fan with the race ECM on & off times have been modified also. Are you running a RSS ? to help cool the rear cylinder?
And in the above thread with Webbie is not changing head gaskets only rocker box gaskets.
Glad your bike is running great.!

thanks for sharing.

Do you have a pic to share with us?

SilverR,

Oops, I will have to learn to read someday-- I do mean rocker box gaskets. Since I have to sit in the corner perhaps you can tell me what RSS means.

I will look for a pic of my bike--ask Cooter, he might have one. We were traveling together back in August.

Well I was going to guess Right side air scoop except that I thought it was something more exotic. Yes, my Uly is equipped with an RSS.

My "other" bike is an 1190RX so that makes me a good guy too I guess. Yes, Cooter is a cool dude--are your ears burning, Coot?

Alright SilverR -- it is time for my true confession. That being, I do not have a clue how to post an image on this forum. Be kind and point me to someplace that will guide me on how to do that. I've been looking with no success.

On the RX--I have raised the bars and come up with a good luggage arrangement. Somebody posted all that for me over on bad weather a few months back under "Vintage's EBR mods". No one there seemed to like them as there was zero response.

I will see if I can find it for you.

OK...I got it all back together and went for a ride. Nothing crazy.....no check engine lights and everything seemed fine. That is until I jumped on it.....and as soon as it hit about 5k, it's like someone hit the kill switch. I could duplicate this consistently. But ONLY when I was holding it wide open. If I accelerated more gradually, it would run up to redline no problem. Sound like a TPS reset issue? I tried resetting it a few times but no luck. I'm tired out from working on it all day.....just put it away. Seems to me like it has to be TPS or ECM related.....because it will hit those RPM's without issue as long as I'm not wide open.

Just when you thought I'd go away! Haha
