oil leak

Gary, you can pry the gaskets off with a screwdriver.

You should not need to remove the rocker boxes, only the covers.

Remove the 4 bolts for each cover and remove cover. Clean oil off of cover and mating surface. Remove old gaskets, inner and perimeter, use a q-tip to clean groove the gaskets sit in.

Install new gaskets, reinstall covers, tighten 4 bolts evenly and torque to proper specs, do not over-tighten as you can warp the cover.

Hey jriffe108,got the fiber gaskets off by lightly using a box cutter and screwdriver, the reason I am thinking of pulling the rocker boxes is because the rear looks like it is blown also and when I talked to Al at ASB he said they can blow as well,I will make sure to tighten all bolts properly, thanks to all for the info.

Hi. have not been on for a couple of days due to a death in my family, one of my favorite uncles',from cancer,he was a cool man,now then, I am posting two new photos and need input, still waiting to put it all back together but would like to know if anyone thinks it is more than just the cover gaskets, don't want to pull the engine any further apart than needed.

Going fine,I am also giving the bike a good cleaning while I have it apart as well as replacing the gaskets,I know that I am replacing the rocker cover gaskets and I may as well do the whole assembly, any suggestions on what to clean the oil off the engine with.

Hi,has any one here when they got a top end gasket set ever come across any white colored ones,my h-d dealer says they carry the better ones than the stock version, but they are sometimes molded in white.

A new question,in the gasket kit that I bought there is what looks like metal/rubber washers and my H-D guys say these replace the fiber ones for the rocker covers,if so do you take the metal washers off the bolts or what, they do not look as if they come off without cutting them, they don't come off by hand.

Hi,got another question besides the one with the above photos, when using the torque wrench can you use an extension on the hex socket for the rocker cover bolts without it throwing the torque reading off too much, also in case anybody is in need of an extra helmet I have a Buell helmet that I have no use for,it says it is a large but my head is either too big or whatever, paid $175.00 but will take $70.00 for it,one of the tabs on the sheild is broken, otherwise in good shape.

i don't know about the rocker box bolt with the washer. my '08 parts book & service manual shows them as seperate pieces but one part number. maybe someone else will chime in.

Hi,again, decided to clean up my bike's frame and engine before putting new gaskets on,have the new updated versions but have a question again,is there a top or bottom to the gaskets or does it matter, also this is for jriffe, won't using q-tips in the grooves leave pieces of the tip in the groove.

Hello, had doctors' appointments last week so was not able to do much to my bike but am finally ready to finish up,got the gaskets on and the engine back in place so all that is left is putting all external parts on,also am going to put breather reroute on as well,I have read that some have had to do a tps reset while others just ride for 15-20 miles til the computer relearns, does this depend on the year of the bike, mine is a 2007 bolt, thanks to all for info given.:D

Another question,as I said I have got most everything back in place, now need to know if you really need to use anti-seize on the front isolator bolt, sorry for asking but I rarely use the stuff,I feel that when all is torqued right it will be fine.:D

my '08 service manual doesn't mention using it, but i've heard people recommend using it on the isolator bolt. did the bolt come out hard or easy when you took it out?

Came out easy after using the breaker bar on it,and went back in easy also by following the manual for installing it.

Cool Gary, I'm gonna be doing my rocker gaskets soon. If you were to do it again how long do you think it would take you?

I would say no more than about half a day, that is without any stopping, for me that is fast, plus you need to have everything ready such as tools, parts, ect.:)

Hi,was looking in the manual as I was putting the muffler on and it says to replace the front strap for the muffler, anyone ever done this, I would think that it should not need replacing unless damaged.[confused]
