S1W to XB rebuild and conversion

Buellxb Forum

i see how the S1 frame neck is different from the X1. I needed to cut the bottom headlight bolt hole off the upper because it interferes with something on the next and does not let you turn.

Interesting build , Id just like an S1 , had an M2 and sold it and got a Firebolt , I was toying with doing the S1 tail conversion on the M2 when i had it , but would really just like to find a good S1 now in its own right , Ill keep my eye on your thread to see how you go with it :)

Interesting build

Thanks! Thats the good thing about the way I have done this imo. It would be just as easy for me to go back to the factory S1W. Everything is bolt on except for the mod to the headlight brackets. But those are just standard S1 stuff. I dont ever plan on selling it. I bought it to keep, mod and enjoy!

It looks like my M2 is going to have something similar to what you are talking about. It looks like 2 pieces of round stock are welded to the front of the steering neck.

Red cool looking bike. Hope mine turns out half as good

Thanks! I'm sure it will, this one has taken me a year. If I get frustrated I just walk away and come back to it.

I was actually going to try and use a set of clubmans that I had from a cr. But I decided that was going to be too much of a PITA. Their would be no way to mount the gauge cluster. So I decided to put the clubmans on my CG and take the crossroad bars off of it and put them on the S1.

Test fitting the crossroad bars

The fit great! They turn lock to lock and clear the manta tank.

Next is the gauge cluster. Its incorrect and has been bothering me since i bought the bike. The speedo is supposed to be the lowest gauge on the left. Someone had swapped them around for some reason. Easy fix though!

Basically all I have done from here is test fit stuff before I tear it all back apart for final assembly. I also plan on doing the XB rocker box swap.

What an amazing project. Really impressive work, brother. Nice job. I love the tubers. Looks awesome with the XB wheels.

what did you do for the speed sensor? is the s1w different than the s1 that uses a mechanical drive off the front wheel?

do you have plans for your old wheels?

Good question, I plan on using a company called www.speedhut.com They have a GPS speedo that I plan on using. I had talked to them last summer and they had told me they would be able to match the design of the tach or I could buy a matched set. But I just want to ride it at this point.

As for the old wheels.........I'm not sure yet. I am one of those that holds on to my old parts just in case I ever want to sell the bike and someone is looking for a stock S1W.

I added of course our timing cover. Smoked for now but I think I actually like the clear one better.

Nice project. If you decide to sell parts sportster guys love tuber forks, they are almost bolt on. I would like to do a swap like this on my thunderbolt some day.

Thanks! I will keep that in mind but I don't think I will ever sell any of the parts or the bike.

Pulled it out in the sunlight this weekend.

Tried to get is to turn over but no go just clicks. It was having this problem before I tore it all down but it was intermitant at the time. Looks like the starter contacts are going to be the issue. Time to tear into the starter!

Starter contacts are out and you can see the bottom is pretty worn.

Easy repair, and for those that dont know. Buell uses and Nippondenso designed starter also used by Toyota. Luckly I have a Toyota service manager that lives next door to me. [up] He is going to take them in and match them up.

Looks great! Belt looks a little tight, and I think nuke blue wheels would really tie it together.
Matt

looks fantastic! can wait to finish up the round of latest mods on mine and ride the damn thing, weathers been warming up and so nice out lately.

nuc blue wheels with polished lips...mmmm

you need one of my pulleys... lol

Thanks, it is a little tight right know. Its a brand new ULY belt and I have to tear everything back down anyway for cleaning and final assembly. If I do the Nuc Blue wheels I will have to change body colors. Which is possible.

That might be a idea!

For sure, and I think with this gearing its going to gear a wheelie monster. Which it already had problems keeping the front wheel down! :D

Cant wait to see what you have added. Love the look of that X1 Pur!
