Tire 240mm ....

Buellxb Forum

Help Support Buellxb Forum:

New Ducati Diavel comes stock with a 240mm rear tire. Handles like a dream. So it's not a given handling will suffer. You may want to look at the Diavel rear tire. It's a 45 aspect ratio compared to a 40. So it's rounder for better handling. It's also a pirelli.

Ride safe,

Jim

Just to clarify: Pirelli makes a 240mm tire in 18" and 17" now. The 18" was the original 240 diablo then ducati "wasn't happy" with the 18x240 and had them create a 17" 240 with "better handling aspects".

I'm currently doing a wide tire project on my 2010 scg which is why i've done all the research. I ended up deciding the 240 is too easily done and will be doing the first 280mm tire in a stock buell swingarm. Just got my XB wheel back from kosman in 18x10 and need to finish modding the swingarm and get wheels powder coated. I'll have a build thread up soon.

a 240 swap is pretty simple widen the rim and install a chain conversion and boom your done. But if you want it to look and flow right, lower it to the Scg height and swap to an Ss swing arm. My personal opinion but I like the small stretch either way.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe you need a rear spacer for the sprocket and a front offset sprocket as well to clear the 240 not to mention an offset/spaced tensioner.

My xb12r with a 240 rear running the original belt drive. Very close but it all fits and no problems with chain adjustments!

love the look of 240 on the XB.... has anyone done business with GrandStand fairly recently? Jw because its something im going to do once i pick up a XB

There's another lengthy thread a within the last few pages where a member did this too, but is a custom built swingarm etc. Not so practicle for handling etc. but something different and looks cool. I'm sure it adds even more to people asking questions about it than a Buell does to start with.

i am doing this at present to one of mine. will have more detail shortly. the hard part is getting someone here to widen my rim.

are the buell rims alloy or magnesium? any one know?

mate. i am in australia. it is not proving easy. also cause i want to keep it a 17" profile as it will suit the better shaped rear tyre as on the diaval 240/45/17 instead of the flatter 240/40/18

found one guy that i am thinking, otherwise its an import and probably 18"

TwoGuns, too bad you don't hav someone like Kosman in Oz--it seems they've been around so long, we take them for granted (sheesh, I remember them widening our old GSXR wheels so they could take the "new" 180-sized tires... Lol!).

I would try contacting Australian drag racing shops to see who does their wheel widening--you might be surprised with a relatively local vendor.

Good luck!

I have a 240 and I carve corners better than when I had a 180. I did some modifications to lower the front and rear suspension and raise the subframe and it made it ride excellent. The bike to me use to lean faster with the 180 and use to scare me a lil but with the 240, you feel like you glide the curves. I wouldnt change it back ever. Look at my tire and you will see im using the complete tire to the edge. I couldnt do that with the 180. Many people critize the 240 and never even rode one or even had one. So if your thinking about getting a 240, great choice my opinion. There are several ways to get it done saving money.

Mailtoome - great post. So - anyone - can I install a particular 240 mm wide rear tire on my XB12R with no mods to any stock components? Thanks!

No, wheel has to be cut and re-welded with a spacer kit. spacers on the rear and front pulleys. Rear set will ned to be spaced out and with out major cutting of the swing arm you will have to go t a chain conversion cause its narrower than the belt. Despite the price, the kit is the best way to go. I switched to the SS swing arm just to make sure the tire wouldn't scape the inner side of the swing arm.

just seen this thread pop up and looks like i didnt come back with an update. i have another thread on here with details and outcomes...

the short of it is that if you carve hard and really push the xb for what it is designed to do, then expect to work a little harder. i really push my buells. i am not the fastest rider out there, but i am to have fun and enjoy my rides.

i have two buells, so modding one for a full wnkr appearance seemed like fun. the outcome has been a lot of hecklers from some fellow riders, and a lot of appreciation and inquisitiveness from others. the best part is seeing riders who see my tyre and laugh and think they can cut me up. well.... i have surprised many! oompah has been on a buell muster and held her own well. i ahve been on rides with other quality riders who i ride with regularly and had no issues playing alond. just had to work a bit harder.

the outcome. if you want a point of difference then this isnt a total waste of time as it may be on other bikes. the buell seems to hold a 240 pretty well. and looks one serious baddass while doing it. i have pretty much taken her to the side of the tread. i had a mate follow me on his buell to record some video. i am waiting to get it and look, as they all said it was freaky watching this buell come round them, then see this big arse tyre, and as i leant into the corner watching the tyre climb up on its edge, like i racing yatch geting way over on its side. so they have spooked me a little at present that i may just roll past the edge.

anyway a pic or three...

Hmmm...thank you for the reply. But above, Hellbound says:

My xb12r with a 240 rear running the original belt drive. Very close but it all fits and no problems with chain adjustments!

So I have a PM in to Hellbound to see how he did it.

On the first page of this thread, a bloke down under posted that he did a 240 rear and kept his belt drive. I PM'd him too, but he is not an active member here. I will try to find him on the Buells Down Under site he refers to.

Anyway, if I find out any news, I will report here.

Thanks again!

got one thing to add though.... I HATE THE FUKN CHAIN! it was a big reserve on doing this, and the only part i dont like. the fuddling fiddling and fukn mess.
