How-To: Crank Case Breather Mod (with pics)

I need some feedback. I'm just looking for a set of eyes on my breather mod. Anything look out of place or troublesome? I put a T between the two stock pieces (cut 6" off of the long piece and 1" off of the short piece), locked them down with the hose clamps, and then ran the hose out underneath the air box cover. It looked/felt too tight to run it on the inside of the frame, so I had to come out just behind the air box and then back under the seat and out just in front of the swing arm on the left side (by the passenger peg). I like that it's pretty well concealed, but want to be sure everything is in place. I have a petcock at the end of the 8-10" of hose that runs down past the filter. Thanks in advance for your input.

filter hidden just out of plain sight, but viewable from the rear if you're looking up. Hose terminates just behind driver's left guard.

Here's a shot that let's you see how it flows on the bike (hose is covered with the plastic corrugated tube). Not too noticeable.

And from the back. There's a bunch of stuff going on there anyways...what's one more black tube-thing?

Mine is on its way... much nicer than the ghetto one I made from a clear fuel filter. Plus chocolate milk color didn't match my bike when it was full.

The only problem with the pegasus catchcan is that it's 1.75" diameter and 5.5" long. A little hard to hide.

Here's the one I'm using, as soon as I have time.
Ebay kart catch can
Its sitting on my shelf, along with a couple other mods for the XB9R.

Forgot to add..........

4 inches long and 1.5 diameter. Availible in silver, black, and blue. Runs around $15

Identical to how I routed mine except I ran mine on down past the heel gaurd and zip tied it under the Left Driver's footpeg. I was afraid the heel gaurd location would let the drippage fly back onto my wheel & such. The footpeg location is better IMO since the drops occasionally end up on my swingarm with the majority getting blown on past without touching the bike.

im so confused on how this is benificial to the performance can some one please!! tell me every pro and con for this mod with catch can and with out please !!!!!!:D

It did nothing for me on an 09 bolt.

For some people it is a cheaper way to turbo your bike, "I can get the tire up in third gear now without clutching it up"

For some it does nothing they just like it because its a mod.

Some just wanted to keep their air filter clean.

does it have anything to do with something the xb's are prone to ,, is it any performace at all if so how much of anything does it do

It is not a performance mod nor meant to be one. It's a mod to undo the EPA mandate that exits the blow-by gases into your airbox to mix with your ingoing air. The mod simply exits the gases to a location of your choosing leaving only clean air to get sucked into your engine.

If someone has a dirty/oily air filter or airbox, they've got bigger issues & this mod is just a band-aid for them.

I did it because I had lower range stuttering/coughing AND I wanted only clean air going into my engine - it helped me. Not sure why some feel the need to bash the mod simply because they didn't do it. It makes it so only clean air goes in.....there's no harm in that.

Not sure why everyone isn't on the same page about this subject by now, but here it is one more time:

The "success" of the mod depends solely on the condition of the bikes engine and the amount of blow-by produced by it; which varies from bike-to-bike. That's why it works for some and some it doesn't.

wil i have to remap the race ecm with race exhaust if i do this mod will it cause it to remap it self or whagt??

TXGOLD, I havent done mine yet, still gathering the parts I want to use. All of my research says a remap is not needed.

im going to do it for shure now , i just am planning the mod and how i want it to turn out now ,, where can i get one of those red cone shaped fiters , autozone? and i like the clear catch can like the air compressor filter but where do i get one of those where do i get them for the price ??

You guys have done a great job with this thread with a wealth of information and ideas. I have decided to do the mod ASAP and after reading this post (and a few others) I have a few observations/questions/comments before I begin:

1. Why not use a "y" connector for the first connection under the airbox (instead of a "t") --seems like you would not want opposing PCV breather lines first exerting pressure against one another OR is a "y" connector possibly a better option so the pressure from each line is directed towards the exit of the system and not toward the opposing line first?

2. Why would you want to route the drain towards your rear wheel or belt where any discharge could in theory affect belt life or possibly cause a rear tire traction hazzard (I know that most have only a miniscule amount of discharge)--after reading everyone's input it seems like the shortest amount of hose and the most downward direction to utilize gravity would be best option...wouldn't more line (and resistance) create more pressure and opportunity for clogging?

3. Has anyone run a separate drain line for each PCV breather? Don't know any reason to do so other to possibly have a way to isolate a potential leak/problem...

4. Please clarify if the catch or drain should be upstream of the filter--seems to me the filter should be "y"ed upstream with filter pointed upward in case line below gets blocked?

5. Why not just run a line with an open drain--is some pressure needed in the re-route system?

6. Is there a consensus of which system works best (e.g. catchcan/plugged line with breather filter, open ended with breather filter, or just a straight open line); it would be nice to get a tally to know who is generally getting the best results?

Sorry for the rambling! I am new to Buell and really love my XB12S! It only has 5K and I haven't observed any spray or other debris in the air filter box at all. Please forgive my newness and thanks in advance for any advice or information!
