Thinking of doing the 08 crank instead of having mine rebalanced. Dark horse said the price was pretty close. So 08 crank new out of the box or balanced 06 crank. Thoughts?

There are some other minor changes that Lunatic laid out in another thread. Stator I think?

{edit}
Yup. He said this:"YES. but before you buy i'd suggest confirming with seller that in fact it is a 03-07 XB crank. have him measure the crank pin. should be 1.25 inches OD. an 08-10 crank will fit BUT the caveat is that you must swap to the later style complete alternator assembly and a few tidbits of hardware to make it work."

I'd think NHRS would absolutely know:) but maybe Lunatic can clarify? I would ASSume by "whole alternator" he means both a different rotor and stator as well, but it's just as easy to find out yourself.

I resolve questions like that by looking up the parts and part numbers to see if they are revised or completely different between engines. Twin motorcycles is a good resource for those exploded parts diagrams to compare the 2. I'm sure it needs Thunderstorm crank bearings and such, but you can get the bearing dimensions to know if the case needs machining (I don't think so)

I actually printed out a hard copy for all the EBR stuff:cool: and it has been invaluable in the shop. Even better detail than the service manual has.

Looks like 08 up is held on with a bolt not a nut. Can anyone verify if the sprocket is interchangeable? I’m entertaining the idea of using an aluminum front sprocket on the yellow bike but I’m not sure if they make a 2008 specific sprocket. Thanks

Entertaining the idea of an aluminum front sprocket is just that. If anything goes wrong, you have aluminum shards where you don't want them.

I don’t think Any shards in the primary would be good. But if I had to pick. I’d pick aluminum over steel any day. Yes aluminum wears very quickly and you have to change the primary oil much more frequently. I know several people than run them with no problem. There’s is risk involved for sure but sometimes risk comes with the territory.
