My only issue with you was that you were trying to say we shouldn't talk about politics because it's a buell forum(not that I want to talk politics, but if others do who cares). And honestly I didn't even care that much I found it more funny than anything that you were complaining about it yet you were the one who decided to open the thread.
I guess I was reacting to my frustration over seeing the finger-pointing and constant bickering back and forth every time I turn on the tube, read a paper, surf the web or log into a web board. I have to realize that everyone else is frustrated as well and this is just another venue where people vent. I made the reference to Badweb because I used to be a frequent user there, but have since been driven off by the hyper-aggressive political tone there, where political differences seem to be welcome only for the purpose of gang-raping someone who doesn't agree with the majority. I'm hopeful that BuellXB doesn't gravitate toward that.
Specifically pertaining to veterans and how they may be affected by this shutdown, I'd also like to see some mutual support amongst us vets by sharing resources or good-to-know info about what is or isn't happening. That's a discussion I think we all would look forward to and benefit from, yes?
On that note:
- If you're a vet with questions about the shutdown, you can download a veteran's field guide to the shutdown at
http://www.va.gov/opa/docs/Field_Guide_20130927.pdf.
- The Veteran's Crisis Hotline is unaffected by shutdown and can be reached at 1-800-273-8255 (Press 1 at the message prompt).
- If you need medical attention during the shutdown, many VHA hospitals and local outpatient clinics will stay open (although probably with reduced staffing), and VBA disability compensation will be paid at least for now. We might see cuts if this drags out to November.
- If you're active duty, your pay is unaffected by the shutdown.
- If you need to talk to someone at the VA, you can call their toll-free number at 1-800-827-1000. I suspect lot of concerned vets are also trying to call them right now, so be patient. I've called several times today only to find the call center reps unable to take calls due to the volume of inquiries (also probably due to furloughed representatives).
- If you want the latest shutdown news affecting veterans or have urgent questions about your benefits and compensation, check to see if you have a local Disabled American Veterans office. They're not government affiliated so they're not affected by the shutdown and are usually staffed by veterans who are there to help veterans, disabled or not. They offer a variety of free services to veterans and their families. Their website is
http://www.dav.org.
- If you have kids attending a DoD school, be aware that teachers working there during the shutdown may be working without pay. Consider showing your support for them by saying "thanks".
